Newton, N.H. | $895,000

A 1720 Colonial house with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, on a five-acre lot

This house was built for Captain Joseph Bartlett, the father of Josiah Bartlett, a New Hampshire delegate to the Continental Congress who signed the Declaration of Independence. Over the last 300 years, it has been expanded and creatively updated: The root cellar, for example, now serves as a wine room.

The town is near the Massachusetts border, about half an hour from Hampton, N.H., and Newburyport, Mass., on the coast. Driving to Manchester, the state’s largest city, takes 45 minutes. Boston is about an hour away.

Size: 3,644 square feet

Price per square foot: $246

Indoors: The house sits behind a wide lawn, with the front door slightly off-center in a simple, shingled facade.

The foyer has wide-plank pine floors and a staircase to the second level. To the right is a small parlor with a fireplace and built-in bookshelves. From there, a doorway leads into a larger living room, with another fireplace and backyard-facing windows. Off this space is a later addition to the house: a sunroom with high ceilings, walls of windows and a pair of doors opening to the backyard.

On the other side of the parlor is a dining room with a fireplace and walls covered in a pastoral mural and cream-painted paneling. Next to this room is a den with more wood paneling. Beyond is an updated kitchen with a large Viking range, checkerboard wood flooring, a breakfast area and access to a full bathroom.

The primary suite is on the second floor, to the right of the stair landing. The bedroom has a fireplace; the bathroom has a deep soaking tub and a separate walk-in shower.

There are three more bedrooms on this level. The one across the hall from the primary bedroom has an en suite bathroom; it is connected to another bedroom, currently used as a home office, by a walk-in closet.

Outdoor space: The property is expansive, with apple trees, a pond used for skating in the winter, and ample space for growing vegetables and flowers. A patio used for outdoor dining is off the sunroom, and there is also a barn that holds wood for the home’s fireplaces.

Taxes: $13,188 (estimated)

Glen Haven, Colo. | $895,000

A renovated farmhouse built around 1900, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a two-acre lot

Glen Haven is less than half an hour from Rocky Mountain National Park, established in 1915 and popular with hikers and campers. Summer is the area’s busiest season, but a number of cross-country skiing routes also draw visitors in the winter.

This house is a mile from the Glen Haven General Store, beloved for its oversized cinnamon rolls, and about a 15-minute drive from hotels, breweries and a grocery store in the town of Estes Park. Boulder and Fort Collins are about an hour’s drive. Cheyenne, Wyo., and Denver are less than two hours away.

Size: 1,470 square feet

Price per square foot: $609

Indoors: A long driveway leads from the main road to the house. The entrance is up a short flight of stairs.

The front door opens into an enclosed porch with white walls and hardwood floors. From there, another door opens into the living room, which has knotty-pine walls, a cast-iron stove and a bay of windows overlooking the wooded surroundings.

To the right is an updated kitchen and dining area wrapped in wide windows, with white cabinetry, stone counters, new appliances, a large center island, a breakfast nook with a built-in bench, and a door to the rear deck.

The primary bedroom, off the living room, has an en suite bathroom with a shower finished in white subway tile.

Two more bedrooms are on the second level, reached by a staircase near the dining area. They have the use of a full bathroom with a combined tub and shower at the bottom of the stairs.

Outdoor space: The wood deck off the kitchen overlooks the backyard. A fenced garden area and a detached two-car garage are within walking distance of the house, as is a patio with views of the creek that winds through the property.

Taxes: $1,548 (estimated)

Washington | $899,000

A three-bedroom, three-bathroom condominium in a 2022 building with two units

This condominium is in Northeast Washington, a few blocks from the busy H Street Corridor. It is within a five-minute walk of a wine bar, a Japanese restaurant and an outpost of Ben’s Chili Bowl. Gallaudet University, a Whole Foods grocery store and a Petco are also nearby.

This part of the city offers easy access to Capitol Hill, which is 20 minutes away by bus or 10 minutes away on bicycle. Union Station, a hub for various commuter trains, is less than two miles away.

Size: 1,678 square feet

Price per square foot: $536

Indoors: This condominium occupies the top floors of the building. The entrance is into the main living area, which has wide-plank hardwood floors, street-facing windows and an open kitchen with stainless steel appliances, glossy, white cabinetry, quartz counters and a large center island that seats four.

At the back of this level is a guest room large enough to hold a queen-size bed. A full bathroom and a laundry room are next door.

The other two bedrooms are on the second floor, reached by an open staircase in the living area. A hallway with a skylight, set up as a home office, is at the top of the stairs. The primary suite, to the left, includes a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a sleek double vanity and a walk-in shower with a glass door. The bedroom on the other side of this floor also has its own bathroom, as well as a glass door that opens to an outdoor staircase leading up to the roof deck.

Outdoor space: The roof deck is spacious, with views of the neighborhood rooftops. Part of the deck is used for outdoor dining; another section is set up as a lounge area. One parking spot is available to buy.

Taxes: $4,104 (estimated) and a $275 monthly homeowner association fee
