Hannah Waddingham has responded to rumors that the upcoming Season 3 finale of Ted Lasso will also be the series finale — and by the looks of it, she would be just as upset as devout fans of the hit Apple TV+ series if the rumors turned out to be true.
In short, the actress — who plays team owner Rebecca Welton — revealed that she doesn’t know what the future holds for Ted Lasso when host Kelly Clarkson grilled her on the gossip during today’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show.
“So the season finale of Ted Lasso is about to happen, and I’ve heard it might be the end-end. Is it the end-end?” Clarkson asked, to which Waddingham replied, “Well, I don’t know. I mean, Jason [Sudeikis] says it’s like the end of that three-season arc.”
She continued, “I feel like trapping him in a dungeon with a notepad and a pen and just going, ‘Dude, what are you doing?’ You can’t step away from it. The characters are so beloved, and we all love it.”
The star joked that she would play Rebecca even “when her teeth are falling out in a retirement home,” adding that she just wants “to see her through.”
Aside from playing the show’s titular character, Sudeikis created the series alongside Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly and Bill Lawrence. Should the foursome decide to expand things further than the “three-season arc,” Clarkson said she would be on board.
“I love the idea, though, of almost taking a show and doing it in different — like, almost how they do it with Marvel, you know what I’m saying? You’d see different characters and different things,” she explained, before looking into the camera and saying, “That’s a good idea — y’all should do that, Jason.”
Meanwhile, Waddingham turned to her own camera and echoed Clarkson in her best American accent, when she said, “I know — Jason!”
While Apple TV+ and the creators have not officially announced whether the series is coming to an end, Sudeikis previously told Deadline that this is “the end of the story that we wanted to tell.” Plus, the Ted Lasso Twitter handle seemed to hint at tonight’s episode being its last.
“A few years ago I hopped on a plane with Coach Beard headin’ to a little town in London,” the post read. “Tonight we play our final match. It’s like what I say about the films of David Lynch. I can’t tell you what’s happenin’, but I sure as heck don’t want it to end.”
The Ted Lasso Season 3 finale airs today (May 30) at 9/8c on Apple TV+.
