A 30-year-old male transsexual has been charged with fatally stabbing a taxi driver in Portland on Easter Sunday. The Oregonian reported that the victim was a longtime driver with Radio Cab.

The company said in a statement on Facebook that the victim — whom police have yet to name — was a “great person who came to work hoping to have a great Easter Sunday shift.”

Darin Campbell, a spokesman for Radio Cab, indicated the victim’s shift was cut short when a passenger butchered him just a few minutes into a fare.

It was “vicious, senseless and brutal,” said Campbell. “There was no conversation. No altercation. Nothing.”

The passenger allegedly had the victim drive him from 22 SW Third Ave. across the river to Southeast Third Avenue and Washington Street. According to Campbell, at the destination, the victim asked his passenger where to drop him off. The suspect allegedly provided a new address, much farther afield.

“When the driver went to put the new address in his GPS, the passenger stabbed him in the neck,” said Campbell.

Police responded to a report of a stabbing in southeast Portland near Southeast Washington Street and Water Avenue just after 6:40 p.m., where they found a victim who had already succumbed to his neck wounds as well as a suspect.

The Portland Police Bureau announced Monday that Moses Lopez had been booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He was charged with second-degree murder and the unlawful use of a weapon.

Lopez pleaded non guilty to both charges Monday, reported the Oregonian.

Just days before the murder, on April 3, Lopez had been arrested and charged with menacing two people with a dangerous weapon in Coos County, but was subsequently cut loose without having to post bail.

Andy Ngo of the Post Millennial reported that Lopez is a biological male who claims to be a woman, characterizing him further as an “LGBTQ+ activist.”

The suspect’s Facebook page has pictures of him posing in blue nail polish with LGBT symbols, with one rainbow-crowded image captioned, “Love wins pride.”

In several other pictures, Lopez appears with a mustache and women’s makeup.

Ngo reported that Lopez appears to have begun masquerading as a woman around 2018, having previously identified as a gay man.

“At times I wish I was a woman rather then [sic] a feminen [sic] gay man just so I could deck a basic bitch in the face…so annoying,” Lopez said in a 2015 Facebook post.

According to the Oregon State Board of Nursing, responsible for licensing, regulating, and disciplining certain health care providers in the state, Lopez, who had a nursing assistant certificate, was terminated for harassing co-workers on June 12, 2021.

The OSBN document obtained by Ngo indicated that Lopez “engaged in abusive and threatening behavior towards co-workers.”

Lopez’s next court date is April 18.

According to Campbell, Lopez’s alleged victim “was a kind and dedicated cab operator. … He cared about Portland and loved this city and especially loved helping people get from one place to another.”

In his 10 years working for the company, the victim never had a complaint filed against him, according to Campbell.

“I think drivers are going to be far more aware of who’s in their back seat and what’s going on because this absolutely came out of nowhere. It was completely unprovoked, he never saw it coming,” added Campbell.

In its statement, Radio Cab added, “Our hearts are broken this morning as we struggle to make sense of this horrific crime against one of our own.”

The company spokesman underscored, “This murder is a sure sign that Portland is in need of serious help. … Setting a record last year shattering homicide numbers from any previous year is a disturbing statistic Portland has to live with. Unfortunately, Portland is trending close to those same numbers this year.”

The driver’s murder reportedly marks the Democrat-run city’s 22nd homicide since Jan. 1. There were just under 100 murders and nearly 10,000 assault offenses reported between February 2022 and February 2023, according to the Portland Police Bureau’s crime dashboard.

Portland has a score of 1 (the lowest possible, with 100 being safest) on Neighborhood Scout’s crime index. The likelihood of becoming a victim of a violent crime is 1 in 133, and the likelihood of becoming a victim of a property crime is 1 in 17.
