Avatar: The Way of Water turned out to be the massive box office hit we all expected. The sequel made nearly $2.31 billion at the box office, and the profits will keep coming. That’s because starting on Tuesday, March 28th, you can watch The Way of Water online from the comfort of your own home, with the Avatar 2 digital release bringing more than 3 hours of additional content.
However, this isn’t the streaming release you’ve been waiting for because Avatar: The Way of Water isn’t available on Disney Plus yet. And you shouldn’t expect it to hit services like Netflix or HBO Max anytime soon.
Avatar is a franchise that Disney controls. Therefore we’d expect The Way of Water to stream on Disney Plus before it makes it to other streaming services. That’s if Disney wants to license it to any competitors, to begin with.
Moreover, Disney won’t make The Way of Water available on Disney Plus before it’s done with the movie’s digital release. We learned earlier this month that Avatar 2 would be available to rent and purchase online on March 28th, and we’re finally there.
James Cameron’s latest blockbuster is now available online from all major digital retailers, including Apple TV, Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, and Movies Anywhere.
Disney is also celebrating Earth Month with The Way of Water’s digital release. The studio will continue to let fans participate in the Keep Our Oceans Amazing campaign. For every Avatar creature you create in the Virtual Pandoran Ocean, Disney will give $5 to The Nature Conservancy (TNC), whose work involves protecting 10% of the ocean by 2030.
