A Georgia teacher who was brutally attacked by a 9th-grade girl last week was hospitalized and said to be unable to walk; the student who beat on her was charged with aggravated battery.

What’s the background?

The vicious beatdown was caught on video last Thursday at Heritage High School in Conyers, the Rockdale Citizen reported.

One video shows a female student hollering in a female teacher’s face inside a classroom: “I don’t give a f*** if you’re an adult or not! You’re not gonna talk to me like that, you dumbass bitch!”

The student is seen pushing or striking the teacher with both hands, and the teacher appears to put her hands up in order to protect herself. As the teacher walks away from the student and heads to the door, the student follows her and hollers, “Bitch, you’re not gonna talk to me like that! You’re not gonna talk to me like that!”

While the teacher is in the hallway, the student attempts to close the door, but the teacher steps back into the doorway, and things escalate. “Do not put your hands on me!” the teacher tells the student.

But the violence spirals out of control as the student repeatedly hits the teacher and grabs the teacher’s hair while the teacher appears to attempt to protect herself; students in the classroom react with hoots and hollers.

A second video shot from an opposite angle across the hallway shows the teacher and student grappling and then tumbling upon the hallway floor. The student quickly gets on top of the teacher and repeatedly hits her until she’s pulled away.

The paper said the teacher apparently didn’t strike the student.

The second video appears to show the teacher’s right leg buckle before she falls; at the end of the second clip, the teacher is heard saying, “My leg’s broken.”

The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office told the paper the teacher was injured and is recovering, and the student was detained and taken to a juvenile facility.

The sheriff’s office on Wednesday told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the student was charged with aggravated battery. Rockdale County Public Schools told WSB-TV the student has been suspended.

What happened to the teacher?

A GoFundMe campaign was launched on behalf of the teacher — identified as Tiwana Turner — to raise money as she recovers. The GoFundMe page says Turner is an English language arts teacher who’s “taught in public education for the past 27 years.”

“When Ms. Turner attempted to redirect the off-task behavior of one of the students, the student proceeded to physically attack her,” the GoFundMe page adds. “During the attack, Ms. Turner was thrown to the ground and sustained multiple injuries. She is currently hospitalized with knee and leg injuries, and is unable to walk. She will not be returning to work anytime soon, and she will require extensive rehabilitation and therapy.”

As of Thursday afternoon, just over $11,000 of the $50,000 goal has been raised.

Anything else?

A separate WSB story published Wednesday reported that a Heritage High School teacher has been fired and arrested allegedly for body-slamming a student while trying to prevent a fight in December.

Edward Senter — who also was athletic director — faces a simple assault charge, the station said.

WSB said it reached out to Senter but didn’t hear back from him; the station added that a request to interview Rockdale County Public Schools Superintendent Terry Oatts was denied.

More from the station:

However, when Channel 2 asked a district spokesperson how can parents feel safe when their kids are at this school, they said they have a weapons detection system, plenty of surveillance cameras, clear backpacks for all students and more school police on campus than they did last year.

WSB said parents are questioning what kind of parenting is going on at home.

“The parents are being friends instead of being parents,” parent Cora Wilson told the station. “There’s a lot of fights here every day, and it’s ridiculous. It makes no sense.”
