Bryan Johnson is a 45-year-old tech mogul with a mission: to be 18 years old again.

Most of us his age and older can identify with that sentiment. What middle-aged person wouldn’t want that? Some of us do a few things here and there to try to hold back the ticking hands of Father Time’s clock with varying degrees of success.

But Johnson has the cash and free time to go to extremes — and he does.

A profile on him for Bloomberg Businessweek reported that Johnson sold his company for $800 million in 2013, which wasn’t a moment too soon as the stress of the tech world left him overweight and depressed. So, he spent his time and massive capital remaking himself.

This year, with a team of 30 doctors at his disposal, he appears on track to spend at least $2 million on his body. Bloomberg said Johnson “wants to have the brain, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, tendons, teeth, skin, hair, bladder, penis, and rectum of an 18-year-old.”

His big idea is named Project Blueprint, the outlet said, and for starters, it provides Johnson with a strict diet — 1,977 vegan calories a day — a daily exercise program, and regimented sleep following two hours of wearing blue-light blocking glasses, Bloomberg said.

His vital signs are constantly taken, and the outlet added that Johnson each month “endures dozens of medical procedures, some quite extreme and painful, then measures their results with additional blood tests, MRIs, ultrasounds, and colonoscopies.”

The doctors working with Johnson told Bloomberg it’s working, as his body is “getting medically younger.”

More from the outlet:

There are some obvious signs that Johnson is at least healthier than most 45-year-olds. The dude is way beyond ripped. His body fat hovers between 5% and 6%, which leaves his muscles and veins on full display. But it’s what has happened inside his body that most excites his doctors. They say his tests show that he’s reduced his overall biological age by at least five years. Their results suggest he has the heart of a 37-year-old, the skin of a 28-year-old and the lung capacity and fitness of an 18-year-old. “All of the markers we are tracking have been improving remarkably,” says [team internist Jeff] Toll.

“What I do may sound extreme, but I’m trying to prove that self-harm and decay are not inevitable,” Johnson told Bloomberg.

More from the outlet:

Each morning starting at 5 a.m., Johnson takes two dozen supplements and medicines. There’s lycopene for artery and skin health; metformin to prevent bowel polyps; turmeric, black pepper and ginger root for liver enzymes and to reduce inflammation; zinc to supplement his vegan diet; and a microdose of lithium for, he says, brain health. Then there’s an hourlong workout, consisting of 25 different exercises, and a green juice packed with creatine, cocoa flavanols, collagen peptides and other goodies. Throughout the day, he eats some solid-ish health food (we’ll get there), with the recipes tweaked based on the results of his latest tests. After eating, Johnson brushes, Waterpiks and flosses before rinsing with tea-tree oil and applying an antioxidant gel. His doctors say he has the gum inflammation of a 17-year-old.

There’s a regimen and series of measurements for every last part of Johnson’s body. He’s taken 33,537 images of his bowels, discovered that his eyelashes are shorter than average and probed the thickness of his carotid artery. He blasts his pelvic floor with electromagnetic pulses to improve muscle tone in hard-to-reach places and has a device that counts the number of his nighttime erections. Of late, he’s been presenting as a teenager in that regard, as well.

Daily, he measures his weight, body mass index and body fat, and he monitors his waking body temperature, blood glucose, heart-rate variations and oxygen levels while sleeping. He’s also undergoing a fairly constant stream of blood, stool and urine tests as well as whole-body MRIs and ultrasounds, plus regular tests aimed more specifically at his kidneys, prostate, thyroid and nervous system.

The writer of the Bloomberg feature got a taste of some of the food Johnson eats, complaining at one point of having to chow down “a mound of vegetables that had been pureed into a gray-brown goop. Once upon a time, it consisted of black lentils, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, garlic, ginger root, lime, cumin, apple cider vinegar, hemp seeds and olive oil, all of which sound fine on their own. But when put together and blended, it felt and tasted like dirt paste.”

Johnson has a 17-year-old son, Talmage, who’s into his dad’s lifestyle — as much as a teen can be, it would seem. After a workout, Talmage came into the house and made his own prepared dinner, noting that while he’s adopted some of his dad’s practices, he won’t do what Bloomberg called “the vegetable sludge,” as he prefers his veggies raw or sautéed,

Here’s a clip of Johnson’s typical morning routine from 2021:
