Director Nancy Meyers took to social media Tuesday to deny rumors that a sequel is in the works for The Holiday, her beloved 2006 hit film.
On Monday, British tabloid The Sun published a story that cited an unnamed source claiming that original stars Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black had signed on for a follow-up to the Christmas rom-com.
The Holiday starred Winslet and Diaz as two single women from opposite sides of the Atlantic who exchange homes during the holiday season. While visiting the foreign homes, the female characters find romance in the forms of Law’s book editor (for Diaz) and Black’s music composer (for Winslet).
The film, which grossed more than $200 million at the global box office during its theatrical run, has developed a devoted fan base of people who enjoy it as a seasonal staple. A TikTok trend has even popped up: People on the platform make references to the movie while requesting house swaps in foreign countries during the holidays.
But for anyone who got excited about the Sun‘s report—which has since spread to other media—Meyers, who also wrote and co-produced The Holiday, has some bad news.
“So many DM’s about this,” Meyers wrote on her official Instagram account. “Sorry but it’s not true.”
The Sun‘s story attributed the sequel news to “a film source,” who reportedly said: “The plan is to start rolling on scenes next year, primarily in the U.K. and in Europe, but the main talent are all signed up and on board.
“It’ll be funny, poignant, and heartwarming—just what everyone wants for Christmas,” the unnamed source told the newspaper.
Newsweek reached out to Meyers for comment.
Meyers’ refutation of a sequel comes not long after actor Jamie Foxx announced that Diaz is coming out of retirement. The 49-year-old actress had taken a break from movies in 2018, but Foxx said on Twitter in June that she will be returning to the screen to star opposite him in the upcoming Netflix action comedy Back in Action.
Diaz’s return announcement included NFL star Tom Brady, who can be heard talking to the two actors in an audio recording.
“I was talking to Jamie, and he said you needed a few tips on how to un-retire. And I am relatively successful at un-retiring,” Brady said in the clip, referring to his decision to return to football after quitting.
Meyers celebrated the news of Diaz’s return to acting on Instagram, writing, “Finally! Some good news!”
