A 16-year-old girl in Australia frantically ran to her neighbor’s house and pleaded for help while her father went on a stabbing rampage and killed her mother.
Officials found the mother-of-three, identified as Nelomie Perera, stabbed to death at a residence in Sandhurst in Melbourne’s south-east Saturday, 7NEWS reported.
The victim’s husband, Dinush Kurera, allegedly used a tomahawk to attack the 16-year-old daughter and her brother before murdering his wife just before midnight.
The teen girl managed to escape and ran to her neighbor’s house. She was captured on CCTV camera pleading and telling a woman who answered the door that her mother might be dead.
“Please, please, please, please, please, please, please!” the young girl reportedly said. “He’s cutting her with a knife, he’s like full-on bashing her with a knife,” the teenager continued, as quoted by The Australian. “She’s dead, I’m pretty sure she’s dead,” she added.
“We’re coming, we’re coming, we’re coming,” a neighbor was heard yelling out in the disturbing footage.
Perera was killed by the time a male neighbor rushed to help.
First responders arrived after receiving reports of an assault and found Perera dead at the scene.
The teenage son was stabbed in his neck and was found with a non-life-threatening head injury. He was taken to the hospital to receive medical attention. The boy underwent surgery, and his condition is serious but stable.
Kurera was arrested at the scene and is facing charges in connection with the slain woman’s death. The neighbor, Vavitis, recalled the moment the teenager arrived at his doorstep and begged for help.
“She was just saying, ‘My mum’s dead, my mum’s dead,’” Vavitis told 9News.
Vavitis was captured running out of the door and rushing to assist the girl, according to Yahoo News Australia. “[It was] just instinct,” he told Seven News, as quoted by the outlet. “First thing to do, try to help … it was all locked up … Trying to do something.. No time.”
Reports said Perera had recently separated from Kurera and changed the locks of her residence, neighbors said.
Kurera was charged with one count of murder and appeared for a brief court hearing Sunday. He did not apply for bail. The accused husband is scheduled to make another appearance in court in April.
