Back in early February, I ran on an old treadmill in the basement of a Beijing hotel wearing a KN95 mask. It was miserable and exhilarating. It was my only option, and it was going to have to do.
That is not a run I will fondly look back on as I reflect on the past year of miles logged.
No, the run I will remember from this year was my first run outside of the Beijing Olympic bubble. I had a 24-hour layover in Paris, and for the first time in weeks, I was able to run outside.
So, I ran to get lost. I cackled with joy and had tears in my eyes and surely spooked the people I passed. It was one of those runs when you feel like a kid, amazed by how far and fast your limbs can take you.
I gave myself a time limit. I had croissants to eat and a flight to catch, and I didn’t want to injure myself on a joyride run.
It was the most memorable run of my year.
Chances are, you have one of those stories, too. A run that will stick with you because of how you felt, where you ran, who you ran with or what you accomplished.
As we approach the end of 2022, we want to hear from you. What was your most memorable run this year? It could be from a horribly cold day when you dragged yourself out the door, then had the local park all to yourself. Maybe you ran the race of your life or discovered a breathtaking route you haven’t shared with anyone. (We can keep a secret.) It could be a run that brought you clarity on something important in your life. It could be your first run after an injury or having a child — or simply your first run. It could have been a run with your dog. Running is an intensely personal endeavor. Tell us about the one that has stuck with you most this year.
