Prince William and Kate Middleton are undertaking their first royal visit to the U.S. in eight years, to attend the second annual Earthshot Prize awards ceremony being hosted in Boston.

The Earthshot Prize grants funding to scale-up eco-initiatives, and has been spearheaded by William, who is its founder and president.

In 2021, the first awards ceremony was hosted in London and was attended both by the prince and his wife, Kate.

A number of stars have announced their attendance at this year’s ceremony including A-list actors and chart-topping singers. But how can you watch, and what is the Earthshot Prize all about? Newsweek has the answers.

When and Where is The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony Being Held?

The 2022 Earthshot Prize awards ceremony is being held on Friday, December 2 at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway in the city of Boston.

The ceremony, which will feature live performances and speeches as well as revealing the recipients of the five Earthshot prizes, will be taped live and then broadcast on Sunday, December 4.

How To Watch The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony

Viewers in the U.S. can watch the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony online through PBS.

The ceremony will begin streaming on pbs.org from 2:00 p.m. ET (11:00 a.m. PT) on December 4 and will be uploaded in full to the station’s YouTube channel later that evening.

Who is Performing at The Earthshot Prize 2022 Awards Ceremony?

The Earthshot Prize has announced the names of a number of celebrity attendees at this year’s awards ceremony in Boston, in addition to Prince William and Kate Middleton who have factored the event into their first visit to the U.S. as the new Prince and Princess of Wales.

Actor Daniel Dae Kim, best known for his roles in Lost and Insurgent, will co-host the ceremony with British broadcaster Clara Amfo.

Sir David Attenborough, Rami Malek, Catherine O’Hara and Shailene Woodley are lined up to present the individual awards with the Princess of Wales among them also.

Billie Eilish is confirmed to be one of the stand-out musical performers of the evening, joined by her brother and song-writing partner FINNEAS.

Annie Lennox will also take to the stage, as well as R&B duo Chloe x Halle and British singer Ellie Goulding who performed at William and Kate’s 2011 wedding reception.

On having the opportunity to co-host the event, Daniel Dae Kim said: “I’m honoured to be co-hosting this year’s Earthshot Prize. The ground-breaking, innovative work of the 2022 Finalists leaves me inspired and hopeful that we can solve the significant challenges facing us today.

“Whether it’s taking care of our planet or healing our communities, each of us can and must step up to do our part. Thank you to this year’s Finalists for leading the way.”

Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara commented that “repairing our planet is one of the most important things we can do in our lifetimes. The passion and ambition of this year’s Earthshot Finalists is much needed in a world of such turmoil, and I am truly honoured to play a role in helping them share their work with the world.”

What is The Earthshot Prize?

Prince William‘s environmental initiative, the Earthshot Prize was launched in 2020 and held its inaugural award ceremony in October 2021.

The prize helps to identify, promote and fund the solutions to help repair the planet over the course of the next ten years.

Each year, five solution “earthshots” are selected and awarded a cash sum of £1 million ($1,196,870) to assist in the scaling up of their initiatives. The five Earthshot goals are: Protect and restore nature; Clean our air; Revive our oceans; Build a waste-free world; Fix our climate.

The Earthshot Prize finalists and winners are selected by a rotating committee of environmental experts and activists and business industrialists.

Boston was chosen as the host city for the second awards ceremony in tribute to President John F. Kennedy, whose 1962 “moonshot” speech served as direct inspiration for the name and spirit of the prize.
