President Joe Biden issued a congratulatory statement to House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy after the GOP secured control of the House of Representatives for the next congressional assembly.
Republicans won their 218th seat, in California, on Wednesday, reported the The New York Times, giving them control of the chamber. In a statement posted by the White House, Biden said that he congratulates “Leader McCarthy on Republicans winning the House majority” and added that he was “ready to work with House Republicans to deliver results for working families.”
“In this election, voters spoke clearly about their concerns: the need to lower costs, protect the right to choose, and preserve our democracy,” Biden wrote. “As I said last week, the future is too promising to be trapped in political warfare.”
Six congressional races in this year’s midterm elections remain to be called as of Wednesday night, meaning Republicans are likely to hold a slim majority in the House. Democrats at the moment hold 211 seats.
McCarthy was nominated to take over as House speaker by his fellow GOP Congress members on Tuesday, ahead of Republicans securing control. He wrote on Twitter later that night that he plans to “take action to fix what Nancy Pelosi so badly broke.”
“House Republicans’ work begins immediately,” McCarthy said, saying that the GOP must “Deliver on our Commitment to America, Hold this Administration accountable, Stop the Biden agenda.”

While Biden is trying ahead of January to reach across the aisle, McCarthy and other GOP leaders have already promised to launch numerous investigations of the White House.
Democrats held control of the Senate, but with McCarthy as speaker, Republicans may still try to deliver on high-level inquiries into the Biden administration, such as investigating the Department of Justice and how the White House is handling the border crisis, according to an article posted by right-wing news and opinion website Daily Caller this month.
“The No. 1 promise we make to the American public is we’re gonna get to the bottom of the truth,” McCarthy told the outlet.
Biden also previously acknowledged that some Republicans have plans to bring articles of impeachment against him once they had control of the House. McCarthy previously stated that he thinks “the country doesn’t like impeachment used for political purposes,” but other GOP voices, like Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, said it should be “first priority” once Republicans win the House.
Newsweek has reached out to McCarthy’s office for comment.
