Sydney Sweeney doesn’t want to talk about her mom’s MAGA-themed birthday party.
“Honestly I feel like nothing I say can help the conversation,” the “Euphoria” star told British GQ in her cover story, published Friday.
“It’s been turning into a wildfire, and nothing I can say will take it back to the correct track,” she added.
Sweeney, 25, noted that she “sadly, yes,” does read negative comments online, claiming people urged her to get media trained.
“Why, do you want to see a robot?” she asked. “I don’t think there’s any winning.”
The “White Lotus” star found herself under fire in August when she posted Instagram pictures from a “surprise hoedown” for her mother’s 60th birthday.
While Sweeney wore a white cowboy hat and a matching dress to the event, other guests were photographed in “Make Sixty Great Again” hats. The caps were red, seemingly inspired by former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
In another photo, a man wore what appeared to be a “Blue Lives Matter” shirt, symbolized by a flag and a blue stripe.
The actress was quick to address the “wild” backlash at the time, asking her social media followers to “please stop making assumptions.”
She went on to write on Twitter, “An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. … Much love to everyone.”
Sweeney grew up in Washington state, telling British GQ that when she goes home, “My family doesn’t understand me or the world I’m in anymore.”
The Emmy nominee explained that she’s in “an in-between place,” clarifying, “In this industry, my home and the place that grounds me is so vastly different to how people live there.”
Sweeney called her family members “mostly Rues,” referencing her “Euphoria” co-star Zendaya’s character, who struggles with drug addiction.
“I’ve never actually tried any drug, never drank, because I’ve seen my aunts, uncles, cousins, and the effect not just on that person but the community surrounding them,” she said.
“It’s hard to watch someone want to destroy themselves. It’s hard when people judge people they don’t know.”
