Swifties weren’t ready for it.
Taylor Swift sneakily teased lyrics to a song from her forthcoming album “Midnights” during a speech she gave back in May.
Swift, 32, was receiving her Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from New York University this spring when she told the audience, “We will breathe in, breathe through, breathe deep, breathe out.”
She then joked, “And I am a doctor now, so I know how breathing works.”
At the time, Swift shared that it was the first time she had worn a cap and gown.
NYU called Swift “one of the most prolific and celebrated artists of her generation” in a press release shared ahead of the ceremony.
Fans immediately made the connection after the “All Too Well” singer shared a sneak peek of some of her lyrics from “Midnights” in Spotify billboards stationed in different cities including Nashville, Tenn., and São Paulo, Brazil.
“Breathe in, breathe through, breathe deep, breathe out,” one billboard read, aligning with the speech Swift gave nearly five months ago.
Several Swifties flocked to Twitter to share how ingenious the singer was for dropping the surprise easter egg.
“she’s a mastermind,” one fan tweeted.
“She’s a queen for that,” a second agreed.
“taylor legend best artist of ALL TIME,” a twitter user gushed.
“her mind>>>,” someone added along with “greater-than” signs.
Other billboards around the world revealed more lyrics for her upcoming album “Midnights,” which drops Friday at 12 a.m. ET.
“Just like clockwork, the dominoes cascaded in a line,” one Spotify billboard read, according to Billboard magazine.
Another billboard read, “Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room?”
Swift is no stranger to dropping easter eggs for her fans. In 2019, she wore a jacket covered with pins that gave clues about her seventh studio album, “Lover.” And in 2021, she dropped merch for her rerecorded “Fearless (Taylor’s Version) album that linked back to her the album art of the original album from 2008.
The Grammy winner shared the new track list in a post to her Instagram in early October. One song on the album, “Lavender Haze,” is inspired by her boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
