Netflix has no shame when it comes to the popularity of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. In a recent email to shareholders, the streamer threw shade at HBOâs House of the Dragon and Prime Videoâs The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power while explaining why Ryan Murphy’s controversial true crime series has out-performed both of them.
Per Insider, in Tuesdayâs (Oct. 18) email to shareholders, Netflix included a Google Trends chart comparing the search popularity of key terms âDahmerâ, âHouse of the Dragonâ, and âRings of Powerâ. To the streaming giantâs delight, âDahmerâ was far past the other two as the search term skyrocketed in interest following the showâs release on September 21.
The outlet reports that the chart documented August 15 through October 1, and didnât include the last few weeks — which shows a slight dip in popularity, but still touts “Dahmer” as the most successful of the three. The chart was used to defend Netflixâs binge-watching model, compared to weekly releases – which the streamer has been utilizing sparingly with broadcast programs like The Great British Baking Show and original reality series like Love is Blind and The Circle.
Netflix wrote, âWe think our bingeable release model helps drive substantial engagement, especially for newer titles. This enables viewers to lose themselves in stories they love. As the Google Trends chart shows, the ability to watch all of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story helped drive significant interest in the show.”
And the streamer seems to be right as Dahmer has continued to trend on the streamer and was previously noted as one of Netflixâs most-watched programs, garnering roughly 56 million views in its first two weeks. The true crime series was knocked out of its #1 trending show in the United States spot by The Watcher – which is, coincidentally, also by Murphy.
