Can you believe it’s been a year since Josh Wardle, a New York software developer, first released Wordle to the public? We’re not sure we can, but then, in 2022 every day feels like a minor epoch.

Despite all that’s going on in the world, one constant this year has been the enduring popularity of Wordle.

The game’s simplicity is a big part of its appeal. Each day the player has to guess a five-letter word, in six attempts or less. After each predictions the letters light up, indicating how accurate the guess was. If a letter goes green it is both in the word, and in the correct place. Yellow means the letter features, but has been put in the wrong location, whilst gray means it’s not in the word at all.

Speaking to Newsweek in January, Wardle advised players to experiment with different strategies.

He said: “I’m reluctant to tell anybody how they should play. I would encourage people to experiment with different ideas and to find their own [starting] words, rather than just sticking to the same proven tactics over and over again.”

Later that month, Wordle was sold to The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure fee, though it remains free to play.

A number of other online games, including Quordle, Worldle and Dordle, have popped up over the last year, inspired at least in part by the success of Wordle.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution if you want to work it out for yourself. To help you solve today’s Wordle, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.

Hint #5: We can all be grateful that we do this.

‘Wordle’ #486 Answer for Tuesday, October 18

The answer to today’s Wordle is “Exist.”

A relatively common word, with two vowels, this may not have been the toughest puzzle Wordle has thrown our way, but it was still a challenge! Did you get it? If so, congratulations! If not, don’t worry—the beauty of the game is to see how you can improve! Either way, we hope to see you again tomorrow for the next puzzle.

The next Wordle puzzle will be available at 7 p.m. ET, when the daily update occurs.
