A video of a “surprise” pregnancy reveal during a sonography class has gone viral on TikTok, receiving over 36 million views.

The video, shared by TikTok user @samantha2074, was overlaid with a message that read: “When you’re in lab and you find a surprise.” It showed a classroom setting, with a few women lying beside ultrasound machines.

The clip later turned towards the machine closest to the camera, which showed live footage of what looked like a fetus on the screen. The video then panned to others in the classroom who appeared shocked by what they saw.

As shocking as the discovery may have appeared, a subsequent video post by the same TikToker, which showed the exact same footage minus the background music, suggested that this “surprise” baby reveal was actually staged.

In the second video, the mother-to-be was seen pointing at the screen showing the fetus, while a voice was heard saying “And what’s that?” before the person operating the machine reveals the screen to other class members.

While the age of the pregnant student in the latest viral video is unknown, the teenage birth rate in the U.S. was reported to have hit a record low in 2018, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the National Center for Health Statistics, published in August 2019.

The figure dipped below 18 births per 1,000 girls and women aged from 15 to 19 for the first time since the government began regularly collecting data on this group. In 2018, the birth rate among this group was reported to be less than half the figure recorded back in 2008 (41.5 births per 1,000), according to the center.

Several TikTok users speculated about how old the baby may be. According to MedlinePlus, a website of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “At the end of the 10th week of pregnancy, your baby is no longer an embryo. It is now a fetus, the stage of development up until birth.”

From the 11th to the 14th week, the “baby’s face is well-formed,” while the head is very large (measuring to be around half of the baby’s size). You’ll also see that the baby’s limbs are long and thin, with nails on the fingers and toes, and “your little one can now make a fist,” Medline explains.

Several users on TikTok were amused by the latest viral video, many of them spotting that the reveal of the baby was planned.

In a comment that received over 182,000 likes, user Jessie said: “Baby really said surprise!”

ChubbyCoder wrote: “OMG [oh my god] this would be the perfect way to tell your class. assuming you already knew LOL [laugh out loud],” in a comment that got over 77,000 likes.

In a comment that got over 24,000 likes, user Chief Queef said: “That baby is GROWN there’s no way nobody knew.”

Natalie Bailey said: “100 percent the pregnant girl knew, trainee was in on it too. Decent way to announce to your class though!”

User duugleik said: “Why is this the best video? The reveal, the pointing, the reactions. Oscar worthy,” to which the original poster simply replied with emojis of putting on nail polish, smiley faces wearing black sunglasses and hearts.

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment. The video has not been independently verified.
