Wordle has become a cultural phenomenon since software developer Josh Wardle first released it to the world just under a year ago.

The game is extremely simple, each day the player is tasked with working out a five-letter word in six attempts or less.

If a letter goes green it is both in the word, and in the correct position. Yellow means the letter does feature in the word, but has been put in the wrong place, whilst gray tells you it is not in the answer at all.

In January Wardle spoke to Newsweek about his creation, which he originally designed during the Covid-19 lockdown as something “for me and my partner to enjoy.”

Wardle explained how social media helped Wordle‘s meteoric rise, with the game first taking off in New Zealand.

He said: “For obvious reasons, Wordle has mostly been popular in English-speaking countries. After all, it is a language-based game. When it launched, it actually took hold in New Zealand first…which is something I’ve never experienced before.

“The Twittersphere over there is quite small, so everyone tends to be rather interconnected. That means that if one person shares something, a lot of others are likely to see it as well, which is how Wordle gained such momentum.”

In January Wardle sold Wordle to the New York Times, for an undisclosed seven figure sum, although it has remained free to play.

The game has helped inspire a number of other online brainteasers, including Worldle and Nerdle.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.
