It’s been a year since New York software developer Josh Wardle released his word-based puzzle Wordle to the public, yet the viral brainteaser shows no sign of loosing its charm.

The rules are very simple. Each day a new five letter word is selected, which players must guess in six attempts or less.

After each attempt the letters light up showing how accurate the prediction was. If a letter goes green it is both in the word, and in the correct position. Yellow means the letter features, but is in the wrong place, whilst gray indicates it isn’t in the word at all.

In January, Wardle, originally from Wales in the U.K., said he originally invented the game during coronavirus lockdown as something “for me and my partner to enjoy.”

Despite designing the game Wardle admitted he still finds it challenging. Speaking to Newsweek in January, he explained: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

Wordle was sold to The New York Times for a seven-figure sum in January, though remains free to play.

Since its launch, Wordle has helped inspire a number of other online puzzles, such as Worldle, Nerdle and even Taylordle for Taylor Swift fans.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.

‘Wordle’ #475 Tips and Clues for Friday, October 7

Wordle players can use these five hints to solve puzzle #475.

Hint #1: There is only one vowel.

Hint #2: The first and fourth letter are the same.

Hint #3: Synonyms for today’s answer include “marvelous,” “nifty” and “first rate.”

Hint #4: Cambridge University Dictionary defines the word as “a man, especially in the past, who dressed in expensive, fashionable clothes and was very interested in his own appearance.”

Hint #5: Sounds a bit Jane Austen.

‘Wordle’ #475 Answer for Friday, October 7

The answer to today’s Wordle is “Dandy.”

With one of the most common vowels, and a repeated letter, this might not have been the toughest puzzle Wordle has thrown our way, but it was certainly a challenge! If you got it, congratulations! If not, better luck next time. Either way we hope to see you again tomorrow for the latest brainteaser.

The next Wordle puzzle will be available at 7 p.m. ET, when the daily update occurs.
