Anna Delvey is out on bail. The scammer who once claimed to be a German heiress—real name Anna Sorokin—has been released from federal jail after being arrested by immigration authorities for overstaying her visa in March 2021.
She’s out on a $100,000 bail bond, per Variety, and will be under round-the-clock home confinement with electronic monitoring. But can “Anna Delvey” make ankle monitors chic?
“We are extremely gratified by the court’s decision today to release Anna Sorokin,” her lawyer Duncan Levin told the press, adding, “The judge rightfully recognized that Anna is not a danger to the community.”
In May 2019, Sorokin was convicted “on eight counts, including theft of services and grand larceny,” says Variety, for the various schemes and scams documented (and lightly fictionalized) in Netflix’s addicting, Shonda Rhimes-produced limited series Inventing Anna. (Here’s the original, non-fiction feature from New York Magazine that made her famous.) Sorokin was sentenced to four-to-12 years at the time; after serving three, she was released on parole for good behavior. She was then arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers a month later.

Last month, during her second stint in custody, the fashionable fraudster spoke exclusively to Glamour UK about how she feels the “scammer” label does not apply to her case. “I didn’t scam any of my peers out of any money…all my crimes were against financial institutions,’’ she said, adding, “Secondly, I was never trying to scam them. I always had a plan and my goal was never to permanently deprive anybody of their funds; I was going to return it. I just chose an unorthodox way to go about it.” Her plan, she claimed, was to build a SoHo House for art. Though Sorokin was critical of the Netflix series about her, she did use the money she earned from it toward paying off her debts and fines.
As a condition of her release, Sorokin will not have access to social media, so sadly we won’t hear her weigh in on her own story anymore, like the time when she put Red Table Talk on blast for inviting her former friend Rachel Williams on the show.
Somehow, we have a feeling that won’t stop her from getting in touch.
