Online puzzle Wordle developed into a worldwide sensation soon after being released to the public by software developer Josh Wardle in October 2021.

The game is very simple to play. Each day you have to guess a new five letter word, in six attempts or less. After each guess the letters light up to show how accurate you were. If a letter goes green it is both in the word and in the correct position. Yellow means the letter features in the word, but has been put in the wrong place, whilst gray tells you it doesn’t feature at all.

Wardle, a New Yorker originally from Wales in the U.K., sold Wordle to The New York Times in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Speaking to Newsweek during the same month, Wardle revealed Wordle first took off in a big way in New Zealand.

He said: “For obvious reasons, Wordle has mostly been popular in English-speaking countries. After all, it is a language-based game. When it launched, it actually took hold in New Zealand first…which is something I’ve never experienced before.

“The Twittersphere over there is quite small, so everyone tends to be rather interconnected. That means that if one person shares something, a lot of others are likely to see it as well, which is how Wordle gained such momentum.”

Wordle has helped inspire a number of other online puzzles, including Dordle, Worldle and Nerdle.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.

‘Wordle’ #474 Tips and Clues for Thursday, October 6

Wordle players can use these five hints to solve puzzle #474.

Hint #1: There are no repeated letters.

Hint #2: There is only one vowel, as the third letter.

Hint #3: Synonyms for today’s word include “idleness,” “inactivity” and “indolence.”

Hint #4: Merriam-Webster defines today’s answer as “disinclination to action or labor” or “any of various slow-moving arboreal edentate mammals.”

Hint #5: You might come across one during a visit to the zoo.

‘Wordle’ #474 Answer for Thursday, October 6

The answer to today’s Wordle is “Sloth.”

Well, that was a real brainteaser! With just one vowel, and not one of the more common ones, this likely challenged even experienced players. Did you get it? If so, we’re very impressed! But don’t worry if not, join us again tomorrow and hopefully your luck will change.

The next Wordle puzzle will be available at 7 p.m. ET, when the daily update occurs.
