Wordle is a daily puzzle game where players put their knowledge of the English language to the test, fortunately Newsweek is here to help those who might be stumped with today’s brain teaser.
The rules to Wordle are simple, players use a color-coded system in order to work out what the day’s answer is and input five letters into the six rows.
A green tile means the letter chosen is correct and is in the right place, a yellow one means the letter is right but in the wrong place while a gray square indicates that the letter is not in the word at all.
Players are given six attempts to solve the five-letter word.
Wordle‘s creator Josh Wardle shared the game with the public in October 2021 after first creating it as a game that he and his partner could enjoy.
The game had a humble 90 players on November 1, 2021, but has since gone on to become a globe-spanning phenomenon with millions taking part every single day.
Wardle previously told Newsweek he was intrigued to learn his puzzle game first became popular in New Zealand.
He said: “For obvious reasons, Wordle has mostly been popular in English-speaking countries. After all, it is a language-based game.
“When it launched, it actually took hold in New Zealand first…which is something I’ve never experienced before.
“The Twittersphere over there is quite small, so everyone tends to be rather interconnected. That means if one person shares something, a lot of others are likely to see it as well, which is how Wordle gained such momentum.”
When it became obvious that Wordle was a smash hit, The New York Times stepped in to buy the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum back in January. Despite the big money purchase, the game remains free to play.
