President Joe Biden has seen major gains in approval among women following the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court in June, according to a new poll.
Emerson College on Friday released its latest national survey, tracking numerous political statistics heading into the midterms and beyond. The college found in this most recent survey that Biden’s approval rating was the highest it had been all year, according to its own data, with 45 percent approving of him as president and 49 disapproving, with 5 percent claiming to be “neutral.”
The president’s approval, based on Emerson College’s data, has grown more than his disapproval has fallen, with the former seeing a 3 percent rise compared to a 2 percent drop for the latter. Spencer Kimball, Executive Director of Emerson College Polling, attributed these encouraging numbers for Biden to female voters.
“Biden’s increase in approval appears to be driven by women voters,” Kimball said. “Since July, women voters’ approval of the President has jumped 10 points, from 39 percent to 49 percent.”
The beginning of the steady rise in Biden’s approval, especially among women voters, coincided with the Court’s extremely controversial decision to overturn Roe v. Wade over the summer. Enacted in 1973, Roe protected the right of women to receive abortions at the federal level for nearly four decades.
In the wake of the decision’s end, numerous states across the United States have begun enacting anti-abortion legislation with varying degrees of severity. Some states, including Kentucky and Idaho, already had “trigger laws” on their books that outlawed abortions as soon as the end of Roe went into effect. Others with Republican-led state legislatures, like Indiana, passed new laws amid nationwide pushback. Indiana was the first state to pass such anti-abortion laws, banning the procedure in almost every case, with limited exceptions in the case of rape or incest.
Efforts since then to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law have been unsuccessful. Speaking at an event at the headquarters of the National Education Association in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Biden pledged to successfully codify Roe if two more Democrats are elected to the Senate in the upcoming midterms.
“If you give me two more senators in the United States Senate, I promise you, I promise you, we’re going to codify Roe and once again make Roe the law of the land,” the president said. “The power to get things done is in the hands of the American people, especially the women out there. I don’t think the MAGA Republicans have a clue about the power of American women. Let me tell you something: They’re about to find out.”
Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment.
The Emerson poll further found that the reversal of Roe has pushed more voters to support Democrats for the upcoming midterms.
“Among those much more likely to vote following the Roe v. Wade decision, 70% plan to vote for the Democratic candidate,” Kimball added. “For those whom it makes no difference, 70% plan to vote for the Republican candidate.”
