Wordle, the puzzle first released to the public in by web developer Josh Wardle in October 2021, shows no signs of losings its extraordinary popularity.

Each day players are tasked with guessing a five-letter word in six attempts or less. After each guess the letters light up in different colors, showing how accurate the attempt was. If a letter goes green it is both in the word and in the correct position. Yellow means it is in the word, but has been put in the wrong place. If the letter comes up grey it is not in the word at all.

In January Wardle told Newsweek his original aim was simply to “make a game that my partner would enjoy playing.”

The New Yorker, originally from the U.K., admitted he often struggles with the puzzles saying: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least 4 or 5 attempts.”

Wordle was sold to the New York Times in January for an undisclosed seven figure sum, though it remains free to play.

The game has inspired a number of other online brainteasers, including Wordle, Dordle, Quordle and the math based Nerdle.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.

‘Wordle’ #455 Tips and Clues for Saturday, September 17

Wordle players can use these five hints to solve puzzle #455:

Hint #1 Today’s Wordle includes two vowels, neither of which are the second letter.

Hint #2 There are no repeated letters.

Hint #3 Synonyms for today’s word include ‘Channel’, ‘Course’ and ‘Fall.’

Hint #4 The first letter is one of the first three in the alphabet.

Hint #5 Merriam-Webster defines today’s word as “an inclined plane, sloping channel, or passage down or through which things may pass.”

‘Wordle’ #455 Answer for Saturday, September 17

The answer to today’s Wordle is “Chute.”

Well, that was a tough one! On the face of it not one of the hardest, with two vowels and some of the more commonly used letters. But the word itself was pretty unusual, more than compensating for this. If you got it, congratulations! If not, we hope to see you at this time tomorrow.

The next Wordle puzzle will be available at 7 p.m. ET, when the daily update occurs.
