Three people have been charged in connection with the murder-for-hire plot to kill 47-year-old Daniel Hutchinson. Multiple sources familiar with the case indicated to WJBK that another person might soon be charged.
Hutchinson was a jeweler who sold flashy adornments to a variety of customers, including high-profile rappers and performers.
On June 1, a cyclist pulled up next to Hutchinson, who was sitting beside his wife in a GMC Yukon Denali, parked near a pawn shop he owned in Oak Park — a northern suburb of Metro Detroit. There were no words exchanged between the two vehicles, only a hail of bullets.
The man on the bicycle reportedly fired at least nine shots. Hutchinson’s driver-side door was riddled with holes, and casings were strewn about the lot.
Hutchinson, struck in the head, body, and neck, was pronounced dead at Providence Hospital in Southfield despite officers’ efforts to revive him. His wife, however, was left uninjured.
Police indicated that the shooting was not random but in fact a targeting slaying.
Shortly after the shooting, police detained 44-year-old Roy Larry and charged him with first-degree murder and possession of an illegal firearm.
Angelo Raptoplous, 32, was arrested on August 30 and charged with solicitation to kill both Daniel and Marissa Hutchinson.
Raptopluous is believed to have hired Roy Larry and Roy’s relative, 57-year-old Darnell Larry, to carry out the execution. Darnell was arrested on September 2 and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and a felony firearm charge.
After Hutchinson’s death, rumors circulated about possible motives.
Recently, multiple sources familiar with the case told WJBK that the initiative to kill Daniel and Marissa Hutchinson did not originate with Raptopluous. Rather, an attorney known to both the couple and Raptopluous is alleged to have been the mastermind behind the murder plot.
Sources told WJBK that the attorney in question befriended Hutchinson, became a business associate, and then in the spring, drafted a will for the jeweler.
Unbeknownst to Hutchinson at the time of the document’s signing, the attorney allegedly named himself in the last will and testament. With Marissa and Daniel Hutchinson both dead, that attorney may have had a great deal to gain.
These allegations spurred WJBK to dig further into the attorney’s past, finding that a civil suit had been filed against him. The suit claimed this unnamed attorney had managed to get an elderly man to deed over several Michigan properties to him just months before that same gentleman died of supposedly natural causes.
Oak Park District Judge Michelle Friedman Appel will hear the case for probable cause for all three suspects on October 14.
