Despite a recent series of political and diplomatic victories struck by his administration, President Joe Biden‘s approval rating is still near the lowest level reached during his presidency.

As of September 13, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, 54 percent of Americans disapprove of the president and the work of his administration.

Some 39 percent of Americans, on the other hand, expressed their approval for Biden and the way he’s running the country.

According to a poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports/Pulse Opinion Research, 53 percent of U.S. citizens disapprove of Biden’s handling of the country, while 45 percent are satisfied with it, as of September 12.

Another poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research published on September 15 reveals 53 percent of Americans disapprove of the president’s work, while 38 percent approve.

This is an improvement from the Biden’s lowest point this year, but the president’s approval rating is still far from its peak.

When Biden took office in January 2021, 57 percent of U.S. citizens were satisfied with the president and the work he was doing.

But since the hasty and widely criticized withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in August 2021, Biden’s approval rating has fallen—and has never quite managed to recover to its initial levels.

This year, as lingering pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, the impact of the war in Ukraine on energy prices, and soaring inflation combined to plunge the U.S. economy on the verge of a recession, support for Biden has declined.

For several weeks between May and July, Biden’s approval rating hovered around its lowest rating—36 percent. The president’s record low has not yet reached that of Donald Trump, whose approval rating fell to 33 percent in December 2017.

Biden’s approval rating has seen some improvement in recent weeks, after a series of legislative and political successes.

In July, following the confirmed death of Ayman al-Zawahiri (al-Qaeda’s leader and one of the masterminds behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks) in a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan, and the announcement that gas prices had started to fall, the president’s approval rating experienced a modest boost.

Biden likely had the best week of his presidency so far in July, leading the president’s supporters to reclaim the “Dark Brandon” meme from far-right critics and turn it into a triumphant and unironic show of support.

However, as Democrats face crucial midterm elections in November, Biden appears to have lost the support of some Democratic voters.

According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll, 79 percent of Democrats approved of Biden’s performance this week, compared with 85 percent in August 2021.
