When New York-based software developer Josh Wardle released Wordle to the world in October 2021, he can’t possibly have known what a global sensation he was starting.

Initially Wardle, who is originally from Wales, simply wanted to “make a game that my partner would enjoy playing.”

The objective of Wordle is to guess a five-letter word in six attempts or less. After each guess the letters light up in different colors. If a letter goes green it is both in the word and in the correct place. Yellow means the letter is correct, but not in the right place. If the letter comes up grey it is not in the target word at all.

In an interview with TechCrunch in January, Wardle insisted the game had not changed at all since it was first invented. He said: “”What I built [at the start] is the game that everyone is playing today.”

Questioned on the game’s popularity, he replied: “It was definitely not the intention when I started.”

Wardle admitted even he struggles with his brainteasers, explaining: “I feel smart when I get a Wordle, even though I made the game.”

In January The New York Times brought Wordle for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, though the game remains free to play.

Wordle has inspired a number of other online puzzles, including Dordle, Quordle, Worldle and the math-focused Nerdle.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.
