Even after spending much of late spring and summer in and out of the hospital for various ailments, Halsey continues to be plagued with health troubles, with the singer disclosing that they’d contracted food poisoning while on their “Love and Power” tour in the UK this weekend.
The “Closer” songstress, who uses she/them pronouns, explained that symptoms had hit her Friday just before she was supposed to take the stage at the Leeds half of the two-part Reading and Leeds Festivals.
They updated fans about the incident on Aug. 27 in a statement posted to Instagram Stories that read in part: “No idea how I’m still alive after my Leeds set. I have terrible food poisoning STILL! It started yesterday at 2pm and I somehow made it on stage (after the medical team at the festival were soooo helpful!),” they wrote, according to E! News.
The pop star added that, while they’d played gigs under “messed up conditions” before, the experience of beating back food poisoning symptoms while performing “might be the worst in recent memory. Felt like I was on Jupiter the whole time.”
The “Without Me” singer elaborated on the retched ordeal in a subsequent Instagram post featuring clips of them backstage before and after the concert looking rather worse for wear. Prior to taking the stage, they were apparently being administered fluids through an IV in their arm while lying on a couch — and, upon their departure from the venue, it appears that on-site medics were waiting for them, gurney at the ready.
Despite experiencing near-debilitating symptoms around the Friday set, Halsey made it clear that they were determined to rally so as to see through their commitment as a headliner on the main stage at the Reading half of the festival Sunday night.
Halsey hasn’t been shy in divulging the details of their struggles with multiple chronic conditions. In April, they confessed that for the second time they’d be attending the Grammys in-person within mere “days” of undergoing surgery — the first time having been in 2017 in the wake of having a procedure meant to treat their endometriosis.
Ultimately, the 27-year-old had to leave the 2022 ceremony early and proceeded to spend much of the rest of the month “in and out” of the hospital.
In May, she revealed she’d been diagnosed with a litany of chronic ailments including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. Of the sudden downturn in their overall health, they implied that being pregnant with their now 1-year-old son Ender had taken a toll on their body.
“I don’t want anybody to be worrying. I’m on a treatment plan right now,” they said at the time, also emphasizing that rehearsals for their current “Love and Power” tour were still underway.
