Warning: Contains spoilers from Season 3
“Never Have I Ever” seen so much drama!
Season 2 of “Never Have I Ever” left viewers with the happy ending everyone had been pining for; Devi and Paxton were officially boyfriend and girlfriend. Unfortunately, Daxton isn’t meant to be (at least for now) and there’s even a new love interest named Des (played by Anirudh Pisharody).
“Season 3 ends in a way where we don’t know exactly what happens,” Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who plays Devi, told Page Six. “But I was very very shocked by all the dramatic turns her love life takes, whether it was with the new character, Des, or the breakup with Paxton. I was like, ‘Dang!’”
Ramakrishnan said she can relate to Devi ⦠to an extent.
“I feel like I relate to her, in her journey being very universal, in the sense of her self-love journey, I can definitely relate to that as I feel many people can relate tot to that because I haven’t always loved myself,” the Canadian-born actor explained.
“I think personality-wise, Devi and I are way more different,” she continued, describing herself as “more chill” because she cared less about her grades in high school. “Devi is way more intense when it comes to school.”
Amazingly, “Never Have I Ever” is Ramakrishnan’s first ever role.
She was chosen by co-creator Mindy Kaling out of thousands of candidates after filming her audition tape at a local library using her mom’s camera.
“I would love to tell you that I felt I had a chance and that I felt confident,” she explained with a laugh. “That was absolutely not the truth. I felt very much so like I was doing something for fun, a random video of me would be sent to these random people in LA and they would maybe get a laugh out of it and move on. I thought I had no chance but I was like, ‘Eh what’d I gotta lose?’”
Ramakrishnan, who called her casting a “Cinderella story,” is also keenly aware of what her role means to South-East Asian girls.
“To hear so many fans talk about how they feel so represented by the show, that warms my heart,” she said. “That’s one of my favorite fan interactions because it’s so long overdue, really.”
And for whether she hopes Devi ends up with Paxton in Season 4, fans may be surprised by the answer.
“I am hoping that Devi ends up with true self-love and self-respect,” Ramakrishnan replied.
