Day Shift on Netflix is a movie that knows what audiences want from it: To see Jamie Foxx absolutely destroy some vampires. And it more than delivers, featuring scene after scene of fun-filled and gun-filled action.
The directorial debut for martial artist and stuntman J.J. Perry, and written by Tyler Tice and Shay Hatten, Day Shift stars Foxx as a divorced father who’s just trying to make enough money at his working-class job to afford his daughter’s private school tuition. It just so happens that his job is hunting down vampires and selling their fangs for money. And, as it turns out, there are quite a few vampires in Los Angeles.
Also starring Dave Franco, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Meagan Good, Karla Souza, Steve Howey, Scott Adkins, and the legendary Snoop Dogg himself, this action comedy is exactly what it sounds like. With a breezy run time of just under two hours, you’ll be craving more vampire ass-kicking adventures when the credits start to roll. So will there be a Day Shift sequel?
Will there be a Day Shift 2?
The short answer? We don’t know. There is no official news of a Day Shift sequel at this time. That said, the Day Shift ending certainly leaves room for more, especially now that we know thatâspoiler alertâSnoop Dogg is not dead. Even though he seemingly makes the sacrifice play, in the movie’s final scene, Snoop pops out of a sewer, lights a joint, and waxes poetic about the vampires in LA. If you’ll recall, he was bit in the neck by a vamp before he diedâso it’s possible Snoop is now a vamp himself. With Dave Franco also a vampire, that could lead to all sorts of fun sequel shenanigans.
This is Foxx’s second big action movie with Netflix, after 2020’s Project Power. Foxx also collaborated with the streamer on his sitcom, Dad, Stop Embarrassing Me!, so it’s clear the movie star has a friendly relationship with the studio. That said, though Project Power was a big hit for the streamerâat least according to Netflix’s self-reported numbers, which estimated the movie had about 75 million views in 2021âNetflix never greenlit a Project Power 2. So perhaps Foxx isn’t looking for a Netflix franchise. Foxx may also be a little busy with his upcoming Spawn movie, based on Todd McFarlane’s Image Comics character, and the Law Abiding Citizen sequel.
That said, if Day Shift turns out to be a mega-hit for Netflix, we’re guessing that Foxx and the streamer wouldn’t mind cranking out another film. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
