Shawn Mendes’ recent post to social media drew controversy as some fans called him out for partying after canceling his world tour due to mental health issues.
In celebration of his birthday, the “In My Blood” singer partied in Miami with his friends. However, some fans were upset by his actions. In a post published on Instagram recently, Mendes shared a photo of the pop singer relaxing on a boat—which has gained over 3 million likes.
With over 20,000 comments, many questioned the star’s actions.
One commenter asked, “You can’t tour but you can party it up in Miami?”
“Hehe thats the state of cancelling concerts i see,” another wrote.
“Sets up a huge world tour just to cancel it and chill on a boat,” one Instagram user said.
“Maybe maybe don’t take a vacation on a boat when you had a tour you just cancelled when you already hadn’t been touring for 2 years during Covid which would have been a perfect time to focus on your mental health,” a fan explained.
“Wish my mental health days looked like that,” one pointed out.
Many fans came to the defense of Mendes.
“I am shocked by the disrespectful and ignorant comments on this thread. These people obviously have no idea how seriously mental health affects each person. I applaud him for recognizing he needed help and he got it. I would rather him cancel his tour than something far worse than that. So get off your hate train and show some compassion,” one fan wrote.
“It breaks my heart to see people not taking mental health issues seriously!!i hope you’re doing better and get all the time you need to heal shawn,” echoed another.
A fan explained, “He cancelled his tour to take care of his mental health and you guys that call themselves fans put him down because he went on holiday? Whenever I feel s**tty, I want to pack my things and go on vacation as well. It’s literally his birthday so can he not go somewhere nice?”
“I don’t see a problem with Shawn being on a boat in Miami on his birthday actually I don’t know what y’alls problem is. If I was struggling with mental health I would do the exact same thing..spending time with friends trying to clear the mind,” another commented.
On July 27, after postponing many shows on his Wonder world tour, Mendes posted a statement saying that he is canceling the remaining shows due to mental health issues—in a previous Instagram post, Mendes reveals he “constantly feels like he’s either flying or drowning.”
“I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away. After speaking more with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more clear that I need to take the time I’ve never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger,” he said.
Many fans posted about getting their tickets refunded, others are still waiting for theirs.
