Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has said that being a Christian nationalist is “nothing to be ashamed of” and appeared to hit out at critics during remarks at an event in Texas.

Greene, a Republican who represents Georgia’s 14th congressional district, defended her previous comments about being a Christian nationalist at a CPAC event in Dallas on Friday.

In July, Greene told a Turning Point USA event that the Republican Party should be Christian nationalists and she defended those remarks in Dallas as she addressed accusations that she had made remarks similar to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.

“I take that very seriously,” Greene said. “Ever since I’ve become a member of Congress, I’ve been the most attacked member of Congress in United States history and I’m appalled by it.”

She said that she and her family were also “fed up” with her treatment and said the media have lied about her.

“But when I said that I’m a Christian nationalist, I have nothing to be ashamed of, because that’s what most Americans are,” the congresswoman went on.

“We’re proud of our faith and we love our country. And that will make America great again. When we lean into biblical principles, you know, is there anything wrong with loving God and loving others? No,” Greene said.

Greene went on to suggest that Republican Party should embrace those principles.

“So, I don’t back down from those comments, but I denounce the lying media for what they’ve said,” she said.

During a Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Florida last month, Greene was asked what the “primary focus” of the Republican Party would be heading into the 2022 elections.

Greene acknowledged it was a “tough question” but said: “We need to be the party of nationalism. And I’m a Christian. I say it proudly we should be Christian nationalists.”

“And when Republicans learn to represent most the people that vote for them, then we will be the party that continues to grow without having to chase down certain identities or chase down, you know, certain segments of people,” she said.

Newsweek has asked Representative Greene’s office for comment.

Greene has become a high profile national figure since her election to the House in 2020 and has made a number of controversial statements. She is also a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump.

On Thursday, she said the FBI “needs to be purged” following the leak of a training document purportedly from the agency that listed a number of groups and their logos that the document said were indicative of “militia violent extremism.”

Those logos included the Betsy Ross flag, the Gadsen flag and the Gonzales battle flag. Newsweek has not been able to verify the document.

“So this is shocking and it’s completely wrong,” Greene said in a webcast. “The FBI needs to be purged of individuals that have this and think that these, these logos, are examples of violent extremism because they’re not.”
