A bridesmaid has been slammed online after she pulled out on the day of the wedding because she reportedly looked “fat in the dress.”
In a viral post shared on discussion website Mumsnet, user Thatissorude explained the bridesmaid did not attend over fears of what guests would say about her weight.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of obese people in the U.S. stood at 41.9 percent in 2020.
The woman added in the Saturday, July 30, post: “AIBU (am I being unreasonable) to think that a bridesmaid pulling out of the wedding one hour before they were due to get hair and makeup done is a bit rude?
“Their reason, they look fat in the dress and don’t want the guests talking about them as they walk up the aisle. They also did not attend the day at all.”
The post clearly struck a nerve with Mumsnet users, with many questioning whether the friendship would survive and if there were any underlying reasons as to why the bridesmaid would suddenly pull out.
One Mumsnet user posted: “It’s more than a bit rude. It’s incredibly rude. I’m assuming the bride and groom paid for her whole outfit, hair and makeup, flowers, place at the venue and any other little bits and pieces?
“Is she going to refund them? Hadn’t she seen herself in the dress prior to that? Just sort of shows them how little the bridesmaid thinks of them.”
Another added: “She’s p***ed off with the bride for one reason or another and is being extremely passive aggressive. Maybe extremely jealous. Either way, not a good friend.”
While a third posted: “Did the dress actually not fit? Was it one of those where she was trying to lose weight but didn’t?
“Otherwise seems a very extreme way to act, one which she must surely realize could cause the end of the friendship.”
Weddings can be one of the most stressful things that people can experience during their lifetimes.
A 2020 survey of 500 engaged or newlywed couples by wedding advice website Zola found that 40 percent of respondents reported planning their nuptials as being “extremely” stressful. Some 71 percent of people said it was more stressful than finding a new job.
While 53 percent of couples said their parents were the biggest source of stress ahead of a wedding. Another 33 percent said that it was their in-laws who heaped on the most stress.
The same survey found 43 percent of couples said wedding planning put a strain on their relationship.
