Shaquille O’Neal has been known to shoot off his mouth, something that could be either serious or not.
But it appears he and former teammate Dennis Scott are serious about buying the Orlando Magic if the current owners are open to selling it.
O’Neal said in a recent episode of “The Big Podcast With Shaq” that he is open to purchasing the franchise together with Scott as both played together for the Magic in the 1990s.
“We still run that franchise,” O’Neal said. “And if they want to sell it to us, DeVos family, we ready to go right now.”
Despite needing big money to get any deal done, the NBA Hall of Famer did not appear worried about the money needed to possibly take over the ballclub.
“Dennis, we got the money, you ain’t got to worry bout the money,” O’Neal said. “But this message goes out to the DeVos family. If you’re ready to sell the Orlando Magic, sell it to somebody that’s going to take it to the next level. That’s us.”
O’Neal went further by saying he would hire Scott to be at the helm of the front office as the 53-year-old is no stranger to managing teams.
Scott served as the general manager of the Atlanta Vision of the American Basketball Association.
As far as owning a team, O’Neal became a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings in 2013 before he decided to sell his stake last January.
The Magic have gone through a bumpy ride and ended last season on a sour note as they finished with a 21-51 win-loss record.
The team is hoping to put up a decent showing next season.
Orlando took in Paolo Banchero as the first overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft, a move that surprised pundits.
However, it will take more improvement from within for Orlando to render a better performance for the 2022-23 season.
