Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong passionately told fans that he plans to leave the United States after the Supreme Court overturned its landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.
“F–k America. I’m f–king renouncing my citizenship. I’m f–king coming here,” he declared Friday during the rock band’s concert in London.
Thousands of fans screamed in support of the 50-year-old “American Idiot” singer’s comments as he took a pause before continuing his spiel.
“There’s too much f–king stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f–king excuse for a country,” he shouted.
Armstrong then doubled down and assured his fans overseas that they will be seeing — and hearing — more of him.
“Oh, I’m not kidding. You’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days,” he concluded.
The guitarist was born in California in February 1972. He received honorary citizenship of Viggiano, Italy, where his great-great-grandparents were from, in June 2018.
Although the only major celebrity threatening his citizenship, Armstrong joins a chorus of stars who have condemned the Supreme Court’s ruling last Friday.
“I’m devastated and terrified. I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a s–t about freedom,” Olivia Rodrigo said before singing Lily Allen’s “F–k You” Saturday during her show at Glastonbury Festival.
Meanwhile, fellow Glastonbury performer Phoebe Bridgers, who revealed in May that she had an abortion last year, led a “f–k the Supreme Court” chant.
Taylor Swift tweeted Friday that she is “absolutely terrified that this is where we are – that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that.”
Abortions had been legal across the US for the last 49 years under the premise that it is a person’s protected right to choose what to do with their body. The Supreme Court’s reversal now gives each of the 50 states the power to legalize or ban abortion.
