Cory Wharton’s newborn daughter, Maya, had open heart surgery Tuesday following her tricuspid atresia diagnosis.
The congenital heart disease “happens when the hearts tricuspid valve does not develop,” the “Teen Mom OG” star, 31, told his Instagram followers Friday.
“This valve plays a part in the heart’s essential function, which is to pump blood between the lungs and body,” he went on to write, noting that the infant is in “the recovery process” from her “successful procedure.”
Wharton and girlfriend Taylor Selfridge’s baby will need another open heart surgery in four to six months as well as a third at 3 to 4 years old, the “Challenge” alum added.
For now, Wharton is focusing on “celebrating” his baby girl’s success while visiting her daily in the NICU.
“We can’t wait to watch your personality blossom, and I can’t wait for you to meet your sisters they have SOOOO MUCH love for you,” he concluded his caption, referencing daughters Ryder, 5, and Mila, 2. “They both are going to be incredible big sisters to you.”
Selfridge, 27, called Maya a “little warrior” in the comments section.
The “Ex on the Beach” alum revealed in a post of her own that the diagnosis came 22 weeks into her pregnancy.
“The last nine days have been a complete rollercoaster for us and the most challenging week I’ve had as a mother thus far,” she wrote, thanking her followers in advance for her support.
Selfridge and Wharton, who last posted on Instagram from the hospital on June 1, announced in March that they were expecting their second child together. (He shares his eldest daughter with ex Cheyenne Floyd.)
“Each one of my kids have continued to push me into making me a better man, so I know you’re gonna do the same,” Wharton captioned maternity shoot pics at the time.
He went on to thank Selfridge for their growing brood, gushing, “I can’t wait to start this adventure with you and continue to build this family up.”
