A husband who stood up for his cancer-surviving wife when she was met by a “rude” shop assistant while dress shopping has been praised for being her “Richard Gere” in her “Julia Roberts moment,” referring to the actors from the film Pretty Woman.
The classic 1990s romantic comedy sees a prostitute named Vivian (played by Roberts) hired as an escort by Edward (a wealthy businessman played by Gere).
In one of the film’s most famous scenes, after Vivian is refused service at a luxury store and told “I don’t think we have anything for you,” Edward later takes her on a shopping spree at another shop where he plans to spend “an obscene amount of money” on her.
In a post titled “Julia Roberts moment” on the Mumsnet online forum, user Gouldengirl9—who describes herself as being on “the wrong side of 60. Only 5ft tall and a size 18 with a flabby belly”—was at a “posh shop” to look for a dress to wear for her daughter’s upcoming wedding.
One of the first words spoken to her by a shop assistant “were that these dresses cost over £300 [around $375] so if I want to look at the rails at the back they MIGHT be in my price range,” according to the user, who also said she’s “only just getting over breast cancer, so boobs are lopsided.”
Overhearing what was said, the user’s husband told the shop worker: “My wife has £1000 [around $1,250] to spend on an outfit for our daughter’s wedding and if your stock is only about £300, this is not the shop for her,” before the couple left the store.
“He was only joking about the £1k. I wanted to go home as I was so upset but he persuaded me to carry on shopping,” said the user, who later chose a dress at another store where the workers “couldn’t have been more helpful.”
Several users praised the husband for being a “star” in the way he responded to the “vile” shop assistant.
User Notaneffingcockerspaniel wrote: “Good for you! Nice you had your Richard Gere there too to lift you up…”
AtrociousCircumstance said: “Your DH [dear husband] – what a star! ,” while Horsemad agreed, noting: “I love your DH’s response, what a star he is! .”
WGACA wrote: “Your husband’s response was perfect! I’m glad you got an outfit too.”
Pamlar said: “Congratulations on your daughter’s wedding, on beating cancer and having [a] lovely husband. Am sure you will look fantastic. The sales woman sounds vile, sorry you were treated so appallingly.”
Quoting a line said by Vivian in Pretty Woman when she returns to the shop that shunned her holding bags of clothing bought elsewhere, several users said the way the shop assistant behaved in the latest post was a “big mistake, huge.”
Palavah wrote: “Big mistake, huge! So glad the other shop was lovely to you.”
User dudsville said: “Absolutely agree with everyone here. We don’t get to a ripe age unscathed, but she was vile and your husband is the new MN [Mumsnet] darling. I’m glad you found a nice outfit.”
CaptainTroy added: What a silly saleswoman!! She hasn’t learned that you can never gauge someone’s resources by their appearance. Well done to your DH.”
