Some of Donald Trump‘s closest allies are suggesting that the country does not care about the January 6 committee’s first public hearing on Thursday because there are greater issues facing the nation.
Ahead of the bipartisan panel’s first prime time televised report outlining the events leading up to the insurrection, which the former president is accused of inciting, Trump’s inner circle is already downplaying its potential significance.
On Monday, Fox News confirmed that it will be the only network not to cover the hearings live during prime time, and instead will broadcast them on its Fox Business Network, which has significantly fewer average viewers during the time period.
A number of Trump’s allies rallied behind Fox News’ decision to stick with its usual prime time shows Tucker Carlson Tonight and Hannity on Thursday night, arguing the public is more interested in issues such as the baby formula shortage or rising gas prices.
Lara Trump, who is married to the former president’s son, Eric, described the January 6 investigation as the “biggest scam…perpetrated on the American people since the Russia collusion hoax.”
“This is total nonsense that you’re going to see on Thursday,” Lara Trump told Hannity.
“And the problem is they know it. The Democrats know people do not care about this. They’re desperately trying to get people to buy into this, but the problem is people are more concerned, Sean, with the super-high gas prices.”
Liz Harrington, Trump’s spokeswoman, said the House Select Committee presenting their findings on the Capitol riot in a live broadcast is proof of how “disgustingly out of touch” Washington D.C. and the media are.
“No one wants to see prime time about January 6. They want to see prime time how they’re gonna have baby formula on the shelf,” Harrington told Real America’s Voice show The Water Cooler.
A number of pro-Trump lawmakers are also pushing a similar argument.
“Americans are suffering from out of control inflation & gas prices, high crime, no baby formula, & open border causing record fentanyl deaths,” tweeted Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
“Dems think people care about J6 after Dems caused violent riots w/ $2+ B in damage all over the US in ’20. Yeah. Dig that hole deeper.”
Colorado GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert added: “The national average for a gallon of gas is nearly $5. And what are Dems in DC doing to fix this? Holding illegitimate ‘Jan 6’ hearings during primetime. November will not be kind to these partisan hacks.”
Fox News has faced criticism for its decision to not air Thursday’s hearing about the January 6 attack.
On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 Election, tweeted: “Fox News won’t air the January 6 hearings because they prefer their sedition made fresh on-site.”
A statement from Fox announcing its decision said its news channel’s prime time programs “will cover the hearings as news warrants.” In addition to Fox Business Network, live coverage of the hearings will also run on Fox News Digital, Fox News Audio, and Fox Nation.
Elsewhere, a number of other top Trump allies in Congress said they are planning to counteract the attention given to the January 6 hearing and present the former president in a different light on Thursday.
According to Insider, Ohio GOP Rep. Jim Jordan and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, both of whom have been subpoenaed by the January 6 panel, are plotting a “punch-back-harder strategy” against Thursday’s hearing.
“The entire MAGA movement is united against this illegitimate committee and will work to ensure President Trump is defended against yet another Democrat show trial,” Trump’s spokesman Taylor Budowich told Insider.
“Elected leaders and conservative organizations from every corner of our party are working together to ensure every American is informed by the truth, something the Fake News media is unwilling to do.”
