The town of Kiel in Wisconsin has received six bomb threats as of Wednesday due to an ongoing Title IX investigation at a middle school.

According to the Post-Crescent, the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) requested a Title IX investigation on three eighth-grade boys who used the wrong pronouns in addressing another student. Title IX is the landmark federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in education.

After an investigation into the misused pronoun incident began, Kiel Police Department announced on May 23 that a bomb threat had been placed at the Kiel Middle School. In a press release, Chief of Police Dave Funkhouser wrote, “The threat made direct reference to the ongoing Title IX investigation being conducted by the Kiel Area School District.” Students at all schools in the district were evacuated that day and no bombs were discovered.

The second threat was placed at 7:40 a.m. the following day, once again targeting the Kiel Middle School. The third threat was received on May 26, the fourth on May 27, and the fifth on May 31. The threat on Tuesday included not just the middle school, but Kiel High School, the school district office, Zielanis Elementary School, Kiel City Hall, and the Kiel Public Library as well, the police said.

The sixth bomb threat was made on June 1, and the press release from Kiel police, shared on their Facebook page, said, “The City of Kiel Police Department received a threat that if the Kiel Area School District does not drop the Title IX investigation by Friday, June 3, 2022, multiple locations in the City of Kiel will be targeted.”

The list of locations threatened included all Kiel schools both public and private, all roads, utility stations, city buildings, all stores, the wastewater treatment plant, and the Kiel Police Department.

Police said that they are “working with local, state, and federal authorities” to investigate the threats.

Newsweek reached out to the Kiel Police Department for comment.

Several threats of violence have occurred in the last few weeks, especially after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School last week in Uvalde, Texas, in which a gunman shot and killed 19 children and two teachers.

A ten-year-old in Florida was arrested a few days later for threatening another mass shooting in a text message.

Back in February, a 16-year-old was charged after calling in bomb threats to several high schools in the Washington D.C. area as well, and several HBCU schools received bomb threats earlier this year.
