A Starbucks worker has shared their thoughts on a type of drink they don’t like making, describing customers who order it as deserving a “special place in hell.”
TikTok user @alewhatsup works in a Target Starbucks and sparked fierce debate online after announcing the drink she hates to make.
Sweet cream cold foam is a relatively new item on the Starbucks menu, but @alewhatsup explained that customers who order it with their drinks make themselves unpopular. “There’s a special place in hell for people that get sweet cold foam on their drinks,” she wrote with on-screen text over a clip of her in her Starbucks uniform.
The post gained over 800,000 views but left a sour taste in the mouth of many. Although the barista didn’t give specifics on just why she doesn’t enjoy making sweet cream cold foam, comments left by others suggested that the reason was the need to use and clean a high-speed blender for such a small amount of product each time. To make sweet cream cold foam, vanilla syrup, milk and heavy cream is whipped in a cold foam blender.
@alewhatsup didn’t predict the backlash to her dislike of the menu item however, responding: “People are serious about their foam I guess.”
For many, the video was a reminder of how many baristas seemingly often feel about customer orders, with one writing: “I’ve had baristas roll their eyes/ scoff at me for ordering an item directly off the menu with no customization…makes me think y’all should just quit.”
“I swear to god every barista on here makes me feel bad about ordering literally ANY drink,” added another.
Other baristas however were split on @alewhatsup’s view on making sweet cold foam, with some agreeing and listing other difficult options, while others encouraged customers in the comments to continue ordering what they like.
“Frappes or refreshers with cold foam make me want to quit on the spot and that’s all people order now,” wrote one user.
“It’s the worst when you make a batch, and then a ticket prints with sweet cream cold foam right after you cleaned the pitcher,” commented another barista.
“When people get salted caramel cold foam,” added another, to which @alewhatsup described as the “worst” writing: “My eye literally twitches when they ask for that during a rush.”
“As an ex starbucks barista, ORDER WHATEVER U WANT BABE ITS OKAY,” another user said, giving an alternative viewpoint.
Newsweek has contacted @alewhatsup and Starbucks for comment.
Starbucks baristas have become commonplace on TikTok, making content surrounding their jobs and often, their views towards it. In 2021 one Starbucks barista went viral on the app after showing the “grossest” drink he had made.
The barista began with what seemed like a regular fruit-based drink, using mango and dragon fruit juice and lemonade, almost making up a classic Mango Dragon Fruit Lemonade Refresher. A shot of espresso was then introduced, poured and shaken into the mixture.
“This is so disgusting, seriously,” wrote the barista, describing the drink as a “mango dragon fruit with espresso.”
