A Florida man has been accused of allegedly burying his father’s dog alive and then laughing about it when talking to police, according to multiple reports.
The man, 33-year-old Tyler Crevasse, has since been arrested for cruelty to animals and domestic battery, WESH 2 News reported.
In an affidavit obtained by Newsweek, police said Crevasse was arrested Sunday after they found him engaged in a physical altercation with his father over his father’s dog.
According to police, Crevasse admitted to killing his father’s dog, stating he wrapped the dog in a wet towel “while [it] was still alive” and buried it in the backyard because it was “old” and he assumed it was “already dying.” He also told the officers where they could find the dog’s remains.
“[Crevasse] advised where he buried the dog, and it [the dog’s remains] was later found in the area where [Crevasse] advised it was located,” police said, adding that Crevasse “kept laughing” when talking about the dog.
Crevasse’s father was taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the fight. Crevasse, meanwhile, was taken to the Pinellas County Jail, where he is now being held on a $10,000 bond.
Under Florida statute 828.12, “it is illegal to commit cruelty to animals,” said the Law Offices of Roger P. Foley. “There are two types of animal cruelty in Florida: misdemeanor animal cruelty and felony animal cruelty. The main difference between the two is that misdemeanor animal cruelty involves an isolated event while felony animal cruelty is ongoing pain and suffering.”
Those found guilty of misdemeanor animal cruelty may be sentenced to up to 365 days in jail or receive a maximum fine of $5,000, the law office explained. Those found guilty of a felony charge may be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Sadly, Crevasse isn’t the first person from Florida to face animal cruelty charges.
Last summer, a Florida couple was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after police found 17 dehydrated animals in the back of their U-Haul.
Last week, a dog owner in Florida was arrested on multiple counts of animal cruelty after officials said she used a BB gun to shoot her pets “trying to dig their way out of her yard.” Her neighbor reported her to police after hearing 15 rounds of BB gunfire in a period of 30 to 45 minutes.
And back in October, a Florida animal “rescuer” was charged with animal cruelty after it was discovered he was keeping puppies in “horrifying conditions.”
