Drew Barrymore wants to dish with the Princess of Pop herself, Britney Spears. Ahead of the Season 3 premiere of The Drew Barrymore Show, the host/actress/entrepreneur chatted with Variety about the success of her show, and revealed the big name she’s hoping to interview on the daytime hit next.
Although she’s yet to have Spears join her eponymous talk show, Barrymore told Variety she hopes to have an “openhearted” chat with the performer. She explained, “We can have a unique conversation. There’s not a ton of us out there who have publicly lost our freedom, had breakdowns in front of everyone, become punchlines and fought our way back.”
While Spears was recently freed from a years-long conservatorship put in place after a breakdown — every detail of which was captured by paparazzi hungry for footage of the singer — Barrymore, too, has had her fair share of scandals in the spotlight. She checked into rehab for an addiction to cocaine and was placed in a mental institution by her mother in her early teens.
And whenever Spears does land beside Barrymore on her show, the actress told Variety she’ll be all ears. Barrymore said that while she’s learned plenty from hosting her own show, including how to “become a better listener.”
“In the beginning, I over-talked to people, which I felt embarrassed about,” she said. “There’s an art figuring out how to navigate a conversation — and when to stop talking.”
Barrymore first launched her talk show in 2020, and has been making headlines ever since, whether she’s reuniting with her ex-husband after 15 years apart, getting emotional over a birthday surprise, or divulging juicy secrets about her love life.
If she can snag an interview with the press-shy Spears, it would surely be the highlight of Barrymore’s talk show host career — if Oprah doesn’t beat her there first.
