Meghan McCain has branded Marjorie Taylor Greene “a freak” after the GOP congresswoman bizarrely told Transportation Secretary Peter Buttigieg and his husband to “stay out of our girls’ bathrooms.”
Greene took aim at Buttigieg during a rally in Commerce, Georgia, headlined by former president Donald Trump on Saturday.
“You know what? Pete Buttigieg can take his electric vehicles and his bicycle, and he and his husband can stay out of our girls’ bathrooms,” she said, eliciting cheers.
It’s not clear what exactly Greene meant by the comment, but she has a history of spouting extreme and hateful rhetoric and embracing conspiracy theories, which has seen her stripped of committee assignments and her personal Twitter account permanently banned.
During her speech on Saturday, she also spoke about transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, saying “he” needs to go back to the men’s team “because we’re going to kick the biological men out of the women’s sports.”
McCain, a former panelist on The View and the daughter of the late John McCain, shared a clip from Greene’s speech on Twitter, adding: “Just keep in mind Trump supporters and GOP leadership have more of a problem with @Liz_Cheney than this freak.”
Last year, the Wyoming GOP voted to no longer recognize Cheney as a member of the Republican Party due to her criticism of former president Donald Trump, and vote to impeach him for his role in inciting the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
In May last year, Republicans in Washington, D.C., voted to remove Cheney from a top congressional leadership position over her criticism of Trump.
Others on Twitter also criticized Greene’s comments about Buttigieg.
Marcus Flowers, an Army veteran running against Greene, tweeted: “Marjorie Taylor Greene’s blatant homophobia is disgusting. The people of Georgia deserve better, and that’s why I will unseat her.”
Another challenger, Holly McCormack, wrote: “Homophobia and transphobia have no place in the United States Congress. I’m going to beat Marjorie Taylor Greene this November.”
Rep. Ted Lieu wrote: “Majorie Taylor Greene is the face of the @GOP. I will continue to highlight @RepMTG’s homophobia, hatred, and unAmerican views.”
Journalist Aaron Rupar called Greene’s remarks “unvarnished homophobia” that “gets big cheers from Trump fans at his rally in Georgia.”
Some suggested that Greene appeared to be confusing homosexuality with being transgender. Buttigieg and his husband Chasten, an LGBTQ rights advocate, are cisgender gay men.
“Um, can someone tell Marjorie Taylor Greene that gay men are…the last people who’d want to prey on women?” Billy Binion tweeted.
It comes as a group of Georgia voters is seeking to bar Greene from running for reelection, saying she supported January 6 rioters.
Buttigieg and Greene’s offices have been contacted for additional comment.
McCain has also been contacted for additional comment.
