Britney Spears revealed she was in a “secret relationship” before her conservatorship began more than 13 years ago.
The pop star has been adjusting to her newfound freedom and sharing her reflections on her life and her past since her court-appointed guardianship was dissolved late last year.
This week, the “Toxic” singer shared a series of such reflections on Instagram and divulged to her fans that just before she was placed in the conservatorship, she had a boyfriend that she kept a secret from her family and her fans.
“I even used to have a boyfriend… we had a secret relationship,” the 40-year-old wrote in a post on Thursday night. “My family couldn’t stand the fact that I disappeared into oblivion in my relationship. They never heard from me anymore, like, ‘What’s her deal? We want to know.’
“Six months later my dad took over my whole career and cut out all my friends and boyfriend.”
The singer said she was “devastated” at the time. She is currently engaged to her long-term boyfriend, Sam Asghari.
In November last year, a judge ruled that Spears could finally be independent from the conservatorship and control of her personal and financial independence was returned to her for the first time since 2008.
Spears did not reveal who the mystery man was or if he is still in her life. She was previously married to Kevin Federline with whom she shares two sons.
Earlier this month, Spears discussed her strained relationship with her family, and opened up about the dancing videos she posts regularly, explaining that they are a source of “healing” for her.
“I recorded 30 videos of dance when I was in Maui…that’s fun to me !!! I know I’m not the best dancer, a lot of people make fun of the way I move but honestly as long as I’m moving and expressing my body outwardly in someway at this point…that’s healing to me !!!” Spears wrote in the caption that accompanied a clip of her performing in a dance studio.
She contrasted the dancing with the therapy she underwent during the conservatorship, adding: “Therapy is all mind work…I did that 10 hours a day, 7 days a week when I was abused…there’s nothing worse than torture of the mind…I’d rather someone slap my face than f*** with my mind !!!”
Spears has also posted a number of nude photos and videos on social media recently. The mother-of-two declared earlier this month that she was showing her body “as a rebel and free woman.”
In a previous Instagram post about topless photos of her, she wrote: “I am…a beautiful …sensitive woman who needs to look at myself in my purest form !!! No…I’m not going to do topless pics for the rest of my life cause that would get boring but it sure as hell helps when you need to be enlightened !!!!”
