The Book of Boba Fett comes to a close with a finale episode that’s bigger than anything we’ve seen on the series to date. Not only was this the longest episode of the bunch, it delivered so much literal bang for your Disney+ subscription buck. All the excitement around the finale probably has you wondering whether or not the show will be back for more. Is this the last we’ve seen of good ol’ Boba Fett?
But before we get into whether or not The Book of Boba Fett will have a second season, we gotta talk about were the finale leaves the ex-bounty hunter and his motley crew of allies. Hopefully you’ve already watched the finale, because we’re venturing into SPOILER territory in the next section!
Does The Book of Boba Fett end on a cliffhanger? Book of Boba Fett spoilers
While the finale does wrap up the series’ main plot, it does leave things just open ended enough for a second season. After an hourlong battle against the Pyke Syndicate, Fett’s ragtag army — which includes Din Djarin, Teenage Cyborg Biker Youths, a squad of sharpshooters from Freetown, Black Krrsantan, Peli Motto, Grogu, and a Rancor — finally succeeds in wiping out the invading force of fish-faced mobsters. Boba Fett even has a one-on-one showdown with his old mentor Cad Bane and, using a gaffi stick and his Tusken fighting skills, Boba emerges victorious. It sure looks like Bane is dead, but it seems highly unlikely that the franchise will keep a character as cool as Cad Bane six feet under. And just to underscore how thoroughly the Pykes have been defeated, Fennec Shand kills all of the traitorous faction leaders of the Tatooine underworld along with the weaselly mayor and the head of the Pyke Syndicate in a matter of second. She’s very good at her job. The season ends with Fett and Shand strolling through the streets of the newly-liberated Mos Espa and the citizens expressing their thanks. We close on a shot of our deadly — but honorable! — duo meeting up with Krrsantan and Skad, Drash, and the rest of the mods. Oh, and the adorable rat-catcher droid from a few weeks back is there too. Meet your new guardians, Mos Espa!
Okay, the real last scene of the season is of Din Djarin and Grogu soaring away from Tatooine in the Mandalorian’s new starfighter, and this clan of two blasting off into hyperspace towards The Mandalorian Season 3 (coming to Disney+ later this year).
Okay, the real real last scene of the scene happens in the middle of the credits. We slowly zoom in on Boba Fett’s bacta tank to see Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) recuperating from getting blasted by Cad Bane last week. And there to make sure that Vanth gets back up on his feet again is the cyborg surgeon (Stephen Bruner, a.k.a. Thundercat) who got Fennec Shand back in fighting shape.
Will there be a Book of Boba Fett Season 2?
There’s no official word yet from Disney or Lucasfilm about the fate of The Book of Boba Fett — but it’s not unlike them to stay mum about future seasons of anything. It is true that The Book of Boba Fett was marketed as a limited series rather than the debut of new ongoing series, but that can always change. The real question is whether or not there’s still more story to tell. Judging by how this season ends, I’d wager that there is.
Those final moments give the series the one thing it’s needed: a colorful cast of contrasting characters. Boba, Fennec, Krrsantan, Drash, Skad — It finally feels like the gang is all here. On top of that, there’s Cobb Vanth’s inevitable return. That has to happen somewhere, and that should be in The Book of Boba Fett Season 2 (mainly because The Mandalorian needs to stay far away from Tatooine — we’ve seen so much Tatooine!). And despite Season 1’s shortcomings, a second season could greatly benefit from having a large cast to play with and, theoretically, more time to prepare a more coherent story.
When will The Book of Boba Fett Season 2 come out on Disney+?
That’s the big question, isn’t it? Considering that The Mandalorian was on a yearly schedule until The Book of Boba Fett came along, it’s possible we could see a new season of Boba Fett in early 2023. However, that would probably require The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett to get separate crews. The reason we didn’t get Mandalorian Season 3 right now was most likely because Boba Fett and Mandalorian have essentially the same crew — close to 500 people worked on both shows. If both of these shows are going to get on a yearly schedule, they’ll need a lot more help.
That’s not taking into account all the other Star Wars shows on the way. Obi-Wan Kenobi is likely the next in line, Andor and The Mandalorian Season 3 will follow after that, and then there’s the Ahsoka Tano series and the still mysterious The Acolyte. There’s just a lot of Star Wars coming up, and the likelihood of us getting The Book of Boba Fett Season 2, and the likelihood of us getting it sooner rather than later, really depends on what Lucasfilm’s long-term plans are for all of these shows. There’s just… a lot going on.
In the meantime, you can rewatch The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+ again while you wait for an update.
