The Italian government urged the Italian-Russian chamber of commerce to scrap a video call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, as tension mounts between Western countries and Moscow over Ukraine.

“The government asked the chamber of commerce, the organizers, to cancel the meeting. In the meantime, several companies decided not to attend,” said someone with direct knowledge of talks between Italian businesses and the government.

The Italian government also called up state-controlled companies on Tuesday to ask them not to attend the meeting, a representative for one of the companies said.

That didn’t stop state-controlled utility Enel from joining the video call, according to two people with direct knowledge of the file. But other companies are expected to skip the meeting.

Energy infrastructure company Snam decided on Tuesday evening not to attend the meeting, before the government’s move, while energy giant Eni said on Tuesday evening it wouldn’t take part.

An Italian official stressed that “this is a private initiative and that no member of the government will participate” in the call with Putin.
