If there’s one thing Netflix is consistently good at, it’s making mediocre-but-extremely-watchable cheesy romantic comedies. This week, that cheesy rom-com is The Royal Treatment, which stars Laura Marano as a New York hairdresser and Mena Massoud as a prince of a made-up country who employs her services.
Directed by Rick Jacobson and written by Holly Hester, The Royal Treatment starts off as any self-respecting cheesy rom-com does: with a meet-cute. In this case, Prince Thomas of Lavania (Massoud), accidentally contacts the working-class, Italian-American-owned salon where Isabelle (Marano) works, instead of the fancy high-end salon he meant to use. Isabelle critiques Thomas’s treatment of his servants, and Thomas is impressed by her NYC brand of candor. Unfortunately, the prince is engaged to be married. Fortunately, he needs a hairdresser for the wedding. You can guess what plays out next.
