Amazon unveiled a fabulous new trailer for The Wheel of Time that focuses on Rosamund Pike‘s Moiraine and gives us our first teases of Robert Jordan’s expansive fantasy world. This is the second official trailer for the Prime Video show and while the first teaser directed its attention on the kids of the Two Rivers, this new trailer gives us glimpses of the Three Oaths, the iconic fortress city of Fal Dara, and even — we think — some Aiel in battle. This new Wheel of Time trailer also seems to give fans a tease of one of the most beloved characters in the books: the sweet, booksmart Ogier Loial.
Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time is based on the 14-plus book series of the same name. Moiraine and her trusty Warder Lan (Daniel Henney) travel to the isolated village of the Two Rivers in a quest to find the “Dragon Reborn,” a person with the enormous power to battle the Dark One and either save or break the world. Moiraine and Lan therefore take four youths — Egwene (Madeleine Madden), Rand (Josha Stradowski), Perrin (Marcus Rutherford), and Mat (Barney Harris) — on a wild journey through darkness and peril in the hopes one of them is the fated Dragon Reborn.
The new Wheel of Time trailer opens with Moiraine taking the famous “Three Oaths” all Aes Sedai sister must in order to become a full member of the order. From there, we see her interact with other Aes Sedai, hear a Warder explain that Aes Sedai are servants, and watch as she embarks with Lan on her journey to the Two Rivers. However fun all those Easter eggs are, we think there might be some small bonus details in the supercut of scenes that get book fans pumped. Like our first looks at Aiel, Whitecloaks, and even…Loial?
Late in the trailer, we see a supercut of action scenes, including a battle taking place on a snowy mountain side. If you slow down, you’ll see veiled soldiers carrying only spears, a bow, and, uh, a rival soldier to the ground. These look to be the legendary Aiel, a race of tribal people known to live in a desert-like waste. The Aiel have a huge part to play in the overall arc of The Wheel of Time, but it’s difficult to know how these scenes fit into the show’s first season. Perhaps it’s a flashback to the Aiel War? An event that predates the series by about twenty years?
At 1:23 in the trailer, we see a Whitecloak — specifically Abdul Salis’s Eamon Valda — enjoying a glass of wine while watching a Yellow Sister of the Aes Sedai burn. The Whitecloaks are a fundamental group that mistrusts all use of the One Power and considers Aes Sedai to be heretical witches. Their look here is a beautiful divergence from the medieval-inspired costumes of the Two Rivers, nodding to the fact that The Wheel of Time takes place in a post-apocalyptic future.
Finally one of the characters fans are most eager to see brought to life is the Ogier Loial (Hammed Animashaun). While this isn’t a clear shot of him, there is most definitely a tall figure hunched behind Egwene in this shot. This must be Loial joining our intrepid heroes at the Waygate, as everyone else who is supposed to be there is accounted for…except Loial.
Other cool Easter eggs include seeing Tam al’Thor (Michael McElhatton) battle a Trolloc with his heron-marked blade, the top knot of Lord Agelmar and his fellow Shenairians, and what seems to be Logain (Alvaro Monte) weaving black threads of the One Power in opposition to an Aes Sedai’s silvery ones.
The Wheel of Time premieres on Prime Video on Friday, November 19.
