Haiti’s First Lady Martine Moïse was airlifted to Florida to be treated for several gunshot wounds after she and her husband were attacked in their home by a squad of shooters early Wednesday.
Moïse, 47, landed at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport at around 3:30 p.m. en route to Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, Local 10 News reported.
Officials said Moïse was in stable but critical condition after the gang of gunmen — who tried to pass themselves off as agents of the US Drug Enforcement Administration — assaulted the Port-au-Prince compound around 1 a.m. local time.
She was shot in the arms and thigh, and also suffered serious injuries to her hand and her abdomen, according to South Florida station.
Her husband, Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated.
Authorities in the impoverished Caribbean country have declared a âstate of siegeâ and closed the international airport.
