A New York City police officer was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the chest on Sunday night while responding to an armed confrontation at an apartment building in Brooklyn, the authorities said.
The bullet struck the officer’s bulletproof vest during the encounter, which took place shortly after 9 p.m. in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens section of Brooklyn, the New York Police Department said.
A police spokesman said the officer’s injuries were not life threatening and that he was conscious and alert at an area hospital.
The gunman was taken into custody, according to the police, who said that he had barricaded himself inside a room with a woman and another man whom he had already shot in the leg. The man with the gunshot wound was in stable condition, the police said. The connection between the gunman and other two people in the apartment was not immediately clear.
This is the fourth shooting of New York City police officers in five months. The most recent shooting of an officer came in January, when an officer who is part of a unit that works to take illegal guns off the streets was struck in the lower back, just below his bulletproof vest, when a man who had been carrying a firearm opened fire after a chase. The officer survived the shooting.
In November, two officers suffered injuries that were not life-threatening when they were shot in Queens. The gunman was killed.
The following month, on Christmas Eve, a police officer in Brooklyn was shot after responding to a call about domestic violence. The officer was saved by the bulletproof vest he was wearing, officials said.
The attacks on police officers have punctuated a nearly yearlong crime wave that has besieged New Yorkers since the pandemic began last March. Citywide, shootings doubled in 2020 over the previous year, climbing to 1,531, and murders rose 44 percent, to 462. In response to the violence, police and city leaders have focused efforts on going after illegal guns.
In 2020, officers arrested nearly 30 percent more people in possession of an illegal firearm compared with 2019, from 3,299 to 4,253, according to police data.
