Trump is the owner of both the Trump Turnberry golf course and Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen in Scotland. Rumors that Trump would visit Turnberry after leaving the White House came after U.S. planes were allegedly spotted on surveillance missions around the Turnberry resort. Although Trump is expected to go to Florida before Biden is inaugurated on Wednesday, the brewing company’s petition to rename the airport was still visible online on Tuesday.
“Donald Trump is scheduled to arrive in Scotland later this week,” the petition read. “He always flies into Glasgow Prestwick Airport. We believe this airport should be renamed ‘Joe Biden International.’”
As of Tuesday, the petition had gained over 4,500 signatures toward a goal of 5,000 signatures.
First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon told reporters in January that Trump would be prohibited from visiting his golf courses while the country remained in COVID-19 lockdown.
“We are not allowing people to come in to Scotland without an essential purpose right now and that would apply to him, just as it applies to anybody else,” Sturgeon said. “Coming to play golf is not what I would consider to be an essential purpose.”
Trump owns 17 golf courses including links in the U.S., Dubai, Indonesia and Ireland. According to The Golf News, Trump has taken more than 300 trips to various golf courses during his time in office.
In the wake of the riot at the U.S. Capitol building, which many have accused Trump of encouraging, the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America chose not to hold the 2022 PGA Championship at the Trump Bedminster golf course in New Jersey.
“It has become clear that conducting the PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand,” said PGA of America President Jim Richerson in a January statement. “It would put at risk the PGA’s ability to deliver on many programs and sustain the longevity of our mission.”
In a January statement, the Trump Organization said it was “incredibly disappointed” with the PGA’s decision. “This is a breach of a binding contract and they have no right to terminate the agreement.”
Trump’s alleged incitement of the Capitol riot, which left 5 individuals dead, led to some major social media platforms suspending Trump’s accounts. In January, the House passed articles of impeachment against Trump for “inciting violence against the Government of the United States.” Trump is the first U.S. president to be impeached twice.
Biden is scheduled to be sworn into office on Wednesday. Trump is not expected to attend the event, although Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence have announced they will be present at Biden’s inauguration.
